: About the ESL Program |

Established in 1979, the American Language and Culture Institute (ALCI) at California State University (CSU) is dedicated to helping international students improve their English language proficiency for personal, academic, and professional growth, as well as to introducing American culture and the system of higher education. The ALCI curriculum provides the necessary language and cultural skills for students to successfully transition from an intensive English language program to an academic program at CSU, Chico or at other equally prestigious American colleges or universities. Outside of the classroom, ALCI students have plenty of opportunities to participate in various university and community activities. Events such as the Welcome Lunch, the International Festival, meetings with conversation partners, and different social gatherings offer essential, informal opportunities for students to practice their language skills and experience American culture. ALCI students receive CSU, Chico identification (ID) cards and gain full access to campus facilities, including the library, student health centers, sports facilities, computer labs with email accounts and internet access, and the International Student Advising Office. With their ID cards, students can also ride local buses free-of-charge. The ALCI is a proud member of AAIEP, the American Association of Intensive English Programs promoting professional standards and high-quality English programs.

Faculty Qualifications |

| All ALCI instructors are highly-qualified, professionally trained instructors that hold Master's degrees in English with concentrations in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) or in similarly related fields. As members of professional educational organizations, ALCI instructors have extensive training and experience teaching English as a Second Language to students from around the world, both in the United States and abroad. The personal and academic qualities of all ALCI instructors make each uniquely qualified to offer meaningful language-learning opportunities and to be sympathetic to the issues important to their students. |

| While attending the ALCI, students have the opportunity to live in on-campus dormitories, off-campus residence halls, or enjoy a homestay experience. Students living on-campus will be close to classes, campus activities, and other students - both American and international. For students who prefer a more independent lifestyle, off-campus residences provides more privacy. The ALCI also arranges homestays for those students who want to experience American culture as a member of a family and practice their English. Students are encouraged to make their housing arrangements as soon as possible due to the limited amount of space available. The ALCI program will assist students in finding private off-campus apartments; however it is the students' responsibility to make their own arrangements. For more information, use the Contact Address to ask the school directly. |
