Intensive English Program
: : About the ESL Program

Established in 1974, the English Language Institute (ELI) in the College of Liberal Arts at Texas A&M University (TAMU) provides international students with an educational experience that develops their English language proficiency, heightens cross cultural awareness, and enhances personal and professional growth and development. The ELI curriculum is designed to provide the necessary language and cultural skills for international students to enroll and participate in academic programs at Texas A&M or at other equally prestigious American colleges or universities. The program's welcoming and supportive atmosphere seeks to treat each ELI student with respect and emphasize the important role students play as members of a community of learners. Students have the opportunity to join the American Conversation Partners program, study in the state-of-the-art Language Lab, and participate in cultural activities organized by the ELI. Students gain access to Texas A&M facilities, including the campus libraries, recreational facilities, the student health center, and TAMU sporting and musical events. The ELI is a proud member of UCIEP, a U.S. consortium of University and College Intensive English Programs known for its high professional standards and quality English language instruction.
: : Student Countries of Origin

The ELI hosts more than 500 students representing approximately 40-50 countries worldwide each year. Recently, students have come to the ELI from Asia (45%), Central and South America (40%), the Middle East (7%), North America (4%), Europe (3%), and Africa (2%).
: : Faculty Qualifications

All ELI instructors are highly-qualified, experienced professionals with master's or doctoral degrees in English, Linguistics, Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL), or in related fields. ELI instructors have extensive training and experience teaching English to students from around the world, both in the United States and abroad. The personal and academic qualities of ELI instructors make each uniquely qualified to offer meaningful language-learning opportunities.
: : Housing

While attending the ELI, the majority of students choose to live off-campus in private apartments located a short distance from campus. The University's Off Campus Student Services office provides a web-based search engine to help students find roommates and available off-campus housing. Some dormitory rooms are available to ELI students. Students living on-campus will be close to classes, campus activities, and other students - both American and international. Students are encouraged to make their housing arrangements as soon as possible due to the limited amount of space available. The ELI program can help students make arrangements for on-campus or off-campus housing. For more information, use the Contact Address to ask the school directly.
