: : About the ESL Program

The International English Language Institute (IELI) was established in 1950 to provide students with outstanding English as a Second Language (ESL) instruction and orientation to life in the United States. IELI students increase their fluency, accuracy, and confidence in English while actively learning and developing the language and study skills needed to succeed at American colleges or universities, to excel in their professional careers, or for their personal enrichment. The IELI curriculum incorporates classroom instruction with multimedia and computer laboratory work, along with all of New York City's cultural resources. IELI students have access to Hunter College's campus facilities including the Hunter College cafeteria and library, the swimming pool, and the Reading and Writing Centers. The IELI is a proud member of UCIEP, a U.S. consortium of University and College Intensive English Programs known for its high professional standards and quality English language instruction.
: : Student Countries of Origin

The IELI hosts students from 70 different nations around the world every year. Recently, students have come to the IELI from Asia (40%), Latin America (25%), Europe (15%), the Middle East (5%), and Africa (1%).
: : Faculty Qualifications

IELI instructors are talented, highly-qualified professionals. Each instructor holds at least a Master's degree in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Language (TESOL) or in related fields. IELI instructors have extensive experience teaching university-level intensive English programs both in the United States, and abroad. As a result of their experience, IELI instructors are sensitive to the needs of their students and offer assistance in helping them adapt to the American culture.
: : Housing

While attending the IELI, students are responsible for making their own housing arrangements. The IELI does not have student dormitories or an American host family service. Students are advised to make their housing arrangements prior to their arrival to the United States. The IELI may recommend private off-campus apartments; however it is the students' responsibility to make their own arrangements. For more information, use the Contact Address to ask the school directly.

: : About the College/University

Founded in 1870 by Thomas Hunter, an Irish immigrant and social reformer, Hunter College was originally established as a teacher-training school for young women. Today, Hunter is a coeducational, fully accredited college with a distinguished reputation for the liberal arts and sciences; it also has professional schools in the areas of education, health sciences, nursing and social work. In fact, Hunter's School of Social Work consistently ranks among the top 10 schools in the nation (U.S. News and World Report's "America's Best Graduate Schools"). As one of the largest colleges in the City University of New York (CUNY) and as one of the oldest public colleges in the country, Hunter is home to more than 20,000 undergraduate and graduate students speaking over 100 different languages and from more than 140 nations. The student body at Hunter is a clear reflection of the cultural, ethnic, and racial diversity of New York City, and its surrounding urban environment. While teaching and research are Hunter's primary mission, community service also plays an essential role for the College. Hunter faculty members seek new ways to acquire knowledge and to design programs to address the countless cultural, social, and political needs of both New York City and the world.
