Intensive English Program
: : About the ESL Program

Established in 1991, the EKU English Language Instruction Program (EELI) prepares non-native English speakers to communicate and interact comfortably in English, to improve their reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills, and to familiarize themselves with North American culture and society outside of the classroom. Each session, 30-50 students from around the world come to EELI to receive outstanding English language instruction and individual attention from EELI instructors. The purpose of the EELI curriculum is to improve students' English skills essential to perform successfully in degree programs at American universities, in short-term programs or for personal growth. EELI students gain full access to Eastern Kentucky University's campus facilities and can enjoy using the sports facilities, campus libraries, the student health center and computer labs with Internet access. EELI is a proud member of AAIEP, the American Association of Intensive English Programs promoting professional standards and high-quality English programs.
: : Student Countries of Origin

EELI hosts 30-50 students from around the world each session. Recently, students have come to EELI from Korea (30%), Japan (25%), South America (10%), Taiwan/Thailand (20%), China (10%), and Europe/Africa (5%).
: : Faculty Qualifications

EELI instructors are highly-qualified, experienced professionals. All EELI instructors hold either Master's or Doctorate degrees in Teaching English as a Second Language or in related fields and have extensive training and experience teaching English to students from around the world. EELI instructors also often teach in the EKU English Department. The personal and academic qualities of EELI instructors make each uniquely qualified to offer meaningful language-learning opportunities and to care deeply about their students.
: : Housing

While attending EELI, students may live in on-campus university dormitories. Students living on campus are close to classes, campus activities, and other students - both American and international. Students are encouraged to apply for housing as soon as possible due to the limited amount of space available. EELI students who are 21 years old or older may live in private off-campus apartments that are close to the University. EELI may introduce private off-campus apartments; however, it is the students' responsibility to make their own arrangements. For more information, use the Contact Address to ask the school directly.
: : Surrounding Area

Eastern Kentucky University's 560-acre campus lies on the south edge of the quiet and safe town of Richmond, Kentucky. A community of about 29,000 residents, Richmond is situated amid the rolling landscape of central Kentucky at the foothills of the Cumberland Mountains. With over 100 buildings on the National Register of Historic Places, Richmond's charming downtown area is regarded as one of Kentucky's finest restored 19th century commercial districts. Visitors and residents alike enjoy strolling down the red brick-bordered sidewalks to explore unique jewelry, antiques and clothing boutiques, as well as visiting one of the many distinctive restaurants. Outdoor enthusiasts enjoy fishing and boating at nearby Lake Reba, a 450-acre recreational complex, horseback riding at Deer Run Stables, camping amid 1,688 acres in the Central Kentucky Wildlife Management Area, or golfing at the 4 1/2 star Gibson Bay Golf Course, an 18-hole championship course. Richmond is situated only 25 miles south of Lexington, a picturesque city home to 235,000 people located in the Bluegrass Region, which is world-famous for its thoroughbred horse farms and race tracks. Richmond is located 90 minutes from the major metropolitan cities of Louisville, Kentucky and Cincinnati, Ohio.

Welcome to the EELI profile on ApplyESL.com. We invite you to improve your English proficiency at EELI, an Intensive English Program, to write your own success story like that of approximately 1,500 others of 65 nationalities since 1991. A Bangladeshi from EELI's first summer (who now has two advanced degrees) has said, "EELI was my beginning." A Salvadoran studying in Level 2 that first summer wrote, punctuating correctly, "EELI feels like family, almost." In a later session, a Thai singing with his class "You Are My Sunshine" said, "EELI is our sunshine." These heartfelt comments represent the feelings of most EELI students.
In designing EELI, I owe its philosophy to several ESL experts - Krashen, H.D. Brown, Rivers, Wilkins - and emphasize zero-level anxiety as the best language-learning environment, respect and even admiration for speakers of the second language impacting learners' rate of fluency, culture and language as inseparable, and exposure to high- interest, comprehensible material. Those studying at EELI often illustrate Wilkins' research showing that one week immersed in the rich second language culture with English all around them can equate with one year of classroom study back in home countries. Cultural enrichment classes offering interactive activities with other student groups and cultural excursions/experiences on and off campus in and out of Kentucky encourage EELI students' using purposeful English with American native speakers.
Knowing that motivation and attitude are the keys to success, EELI provides all the support needed to gain linguistic, cultural, social, and academic skills.
Come to EELI. Let us help you achieve your goals.
