Intensive English Program
: : About the ESL Program

Established in 1994, Marshall University's Learning English for Academic Purposes (L.E.A.P.) Intensive English Program helps students "make the leap" into a college or university in the United States. The purpose of the L.E.A.P. curriculum is to provide students with the academic, language and Internet/computer skills essential to succeed in an American university. Each session, over 45 students from around the world come to L.E.A.P. to receive outstanding English language instruction and individual attention from L.E.A.P. instructors and the advising staff in the Center for International Programs. L.E.A.P. students gain full access to Marshall University's campus facilities and can enjoy using the fitness centers, campus libraries, the student health clinic and computer labs with Internet access. A regular program of social activities is also arranged for L.E.A.P. students and can include holiday parties and dances, ice skating, picnics, horseback riding, visiting amusement parks, and trips to Charleston, West Virginia. L.E.A.P. is a proud member of AAIEP, the American Associate of Intensive English Programs promoting professional standards and high-quality English programs.
: : Student Countries of Origin

L.E.A.P. hosts more than 45 students from around the world each session. Recently, students have come to L.E.A.P. from Asia (30%), the Middle East (25%), Latin America (20%), Europe (15%), and Africa (10%).
: : Faculty Qualifications

L.E.A.P. instructors are highly-qualified, experienced professionals. Instructors hold advanced degrees in Applied Linguistics, Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) or in related fields. The personal and academic qualities of L.E.A.P. instructors make each uniquely qualified to offer meaningful language-learning opportunities and to care deeply about their students.
: : Housing

While attending L.E.A.P., students have the opportunity to live in on-campus dormitories. Students living on-campus will be close to classes, campus activities and other students - both American and international. Homestays are also available however, the L.E.A.P. Program encourages new students to live on-campus for at least one session in order to familiarize themselves with the University and to make new friends. Students must apply for housing through the L.E.A.P. as early as possible due to the limited amount of space available. The School may provide students with information about private off-campus apartments however it is the students' responsibility to make their individual arrangements. For more information, use the Contact Address to ask the school directly.
: : Surrounding Area

The Marshall University campus is ideally located in the small, safe city of Huntington, West Virginia, home to over 60,000 friendly residents. As the second-largest urban center in West Virginia, Huntington is located on the banks of the Ohio River, bordering eastern Kentucky and southern Ohio. The downtown area's wide, tree-lined streets have an old-fashioned 'hometown' feel yet they offer the modern-day conveniences of movie theaters, lively restaurants, public libraries and eclectic art galleries. On the south side of the city, the 70-acre Ritter Park offers a serene, peaceful environment to go on a picnic, play tennis on one of its 11 courts, relax in the famous Rose Garden, or to watch a play performed by The Huntington Outdoor Theater group in the park's amphitheater. When you want to venture outside of the city, an easy drive will take you through the scenic Metro Valley and its wooded hills of Beech Fork State Park, East Lynn Lake and Cabwaylingo State Forest. Huntington is situated 60 miles east of Charleston, the State Capitol and largest city in West Virginia with more than 300,000 people. Huntington is also served by Amtrak Train and the Greyhound Bus Line, providing easy travel to exciting destinations, including New York City and Washington, D.C.
