: About the ESL Program |

In the early 1960s, the English Language Programs (ELP) was established to provide students with outstanding English language instruction and orientation to life in the United States. Each year, 1,800 students and professionals from around the world come to the ELP and are offered a broad selection of English language classes, including general and business English, English for academic preparation and English for professionals in the areas of law, architecture, dental medicine and nursing. Students are also given challenging language learning opportunities outside of the classroom at different locations on-campus and in Philadelphia to practice their English and learn more about American life. Students receive an identification card and gain full access to the University of Pennsylvania's 15 libraries, computer labs with Internet access, campus bus service, an ice skating rink in the winter, indoor swimming pools and gymnasiums, complete with exercise and weight-lifting rooms and indoor courts for various sports. The ELP is a proud member of UCIEP, a U.S. consortium of University and College Intensive English Programs known for its high professional standards and quality English language instruction.

| While attending the ELP, students can experience living on-campus in the ELP House at the Sheraton University City Hotel. Students living on-campus will be close to classes, campus activities, and other students - both American and international. ELP students have the option to live off-campus at the nearby International House of Philadelphia. Off-campus housing offers privacy for students who prefer a more independent lifestyle. The ELP also arranges homestays for students who want to experience American culture as a member of a family and practice their English. Check the Course Data Page to guarantee your preferred housing option is available for the course to which you will apply. It is best to arrange housing as early as possible due to the limited amount of space available. For more information, use the Contact Address to ask the school directly. |

| The University campus is located several minutes from Philadelphia's historic, artistic and commercial centers. Recognized as one of the nation's most historic cities, Philadelphia was the United States capital from 1790-1800 and is the location where the Declaration of Independence was signed. As the 5th largest city in the U.S. with a total population of 1.8 million people, Philadelphia offers its visitors and residents cultural attractions such as the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Pennsylvania Ballet, 50 museums including the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the Philadelphia Zoo, the oldest in the United States. Throughout the year, sports lovers can cheer on Philadelphia's professional basketball, baseball, football and hockey teams. The location of this historic city offers a temperate climate and four distinct seasons. Spring and autumn in Philadelphia are sunny and especially pleasant because of the warm winds off the Atlantic Ocean. The Amtrak train station is only four blocks from the University campus and it provides easy travel to New York City, Washington, D.C., Atlantic City and Boston. |
