Intensive English Program
: : About the ESL Program

The American Language Program (ALP) was established in 1973 to provide non-native English speakers with the academic abilities and language skills essential for future academic success at an American university or to meet their individual career objectives. The ALP encourages intercultural understanding, provides support and guidance for issues both in and outside of the classroom and builds students' confidence to adapt to university life and American culture. ALP students gain access to the University's campus facilities and can enjoy using the library, a state-of-the-art theater, computer laboratories with Internet access, and athletic facilities. The ALP regularly organizes field trips and social activities for its students including barbeques on Angel Island, attending professional sporting events, visiting the Great America Amusement Park and Marine World, outlet shopping, and trips to nearby San Francisco, the majestic Muir Woods, and the wine country of Sonoma and Napa Valley.
: : Credit Courses

Qualified ALP students are placed in university credit classes while they continue studying in the intensive English program. There is also a range of credit bearing certificate courses and a PreMBA program available for qualified students.
: : Student Countries of Origin

The American Language Program hosts more than 600 students from 15 to 20 different countries every year. Recently, students have come to the ALP from Korea (35%), Japan (20%), Taiwan (15%), and other countries around the world (30%).
: : Faculty Qualifications

American Language Program instructors are highly-qualified, experienced professionals. Each instructor holds at least a master's degree in teaching. The majority of ALP instructors have lived and traveled abroad, and have extensive training and experience teaching English to students from around the world. The personal and academic qualities of all ALP instructors make each uniquely qualified to offer meaningful language-learning opportunities and to be sympathetic to the needs of their students as they adjust to a new culture.
: : Housing

While attending the ALP, students have the opportunity to live in a dormitory where they can interact with English speakers. Students living on-campus will be close to classes, campus activities and other students - both American and international. Students are encouraged to arrange housing as early as possible due to the limited amount of space available. The ALP may introduce private off-campus apartments, however it is the students' responsibility to make their own arrangements. For more information, use the Contact Address to ask the school directly.
: : Surrounding Area

Situated on the east shore of the San Francisco Bay, Hayward is a vibrant and diverse community home to 145,000 residents. Located 40 kilometers southeast of San Francisco, the area's parks, arts groups, and recreational and cultural activities make Hayward an ideal place to live, study and play. Hayward's many attractions appeal to all tastes and preferences, from visiting native East Bay animals in their natural habitats at the Sulphur Creek Nature Center, exploring the traditional Japanese Gardens and having group picnics in Kennedy Park to enjoying the Summer Concert Series at nearby Memorial Park. Outdoor enthusiasts can explore the 3,000-acre Garin and Dry Creek Pioneer Regional Parks and its wooded canyons, meadows, creeks and more than 20 miles of hiking trails. Golfers enjoy playing at Skywest, Hayward's professionally rated 18-hole golf course known as "one of the best municipal golf courses in the East Bay." A short trip on the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) public transportation system encourages students, residents and visitors alike to explore the wider Bay Area and its dynamic cultural, entertainment, and social destinations in nearby San Francisco, Oakland, Berkeley, San Jose, and the Silicon Valley.
