Intensive English Program
: : About the ESL Program

Founded in 1964, the Applied English Center (AEC) at the University of Kansas (KU) has earned a well-established reputation for providing excellent English language instruction to students and scholars from all parts of the world. The AEC is committed to addressing the individual needs of their students in order to enhance their cultural adjustment and academic achievement. Each year, more than 600 students come to the AEC to receive academic instruction that will prepare them to study in American universities, as well as to help them develop a deeper understanding of American culture and participate successfully in American society. Outside of the classroom, students have the opportunity to join free conversation groups, study in KU's language laboratory, and strengthen their English skills at the AEC computer lab. AEC students have full access to all KU facilities, including the library, the student health center, and its many sports facilities. The AEC is a proud member of UCIEP, a U.S. consortium of University and College Intensive English Programs known for its high professional standards and quality English language instruction.
: : Credit Courses

AEC students may earn undergraduate credit for completing Level 4 and 5 courses.
: : Student Countries of Origin

Each year, over 400 students from 50 different countries around the world have come to the AEC to study English. Recently, students have come to the AEC from Asia (65%), the Middle East (10%), Latin America (5%), Europe (10%), Africa (5%), and North America (5%).
: : Faculty Qualifications

All 20 AEC administrators and faculty members are professionals that hold either Master's or Ph.D. degrees in English as a Second Language or Applied Linguistics. AEC instructors are active in local and national professional organizations, as well as research groups. The personal and academic qualities and an average of 15 years of teaching experience among AEC instructors make each uniquely qualified to offer meaningful language-learning opportunities to their students.
: : Housing

While attending the AEC, students have the opportunity to live in on-campus dormitories where they can interact with native English speakers. Students living on campus will be close to classes, campus activities and other students - both American and international. Students are encouraged to arrange housing as early as possible due to the limited amount of space available. The AEC may introduce private off-campus apartments, however it is the students' responsibility to make their own arrangements. For more information, use the Contact Address to ask the school directly.
