The Intensive Course in American English and Orientation
: : About the ESL Program

The American Language Institute (ALI) was established in 1945 as part of New York University's School of Continuing and Professional Studies. The main purpose of the ALI is to provide non-native English speakers with the academic abilities and language skills essential to succeed either at an American university or in a professional environment. The ALI curriculum provides their students with a comprehensive program of English language instruction, evaluation and advisement while concurrently orientating them to the United States' multi-cultural environment. Outside of the classroom, students are encouraged to participate in the many field trips and activities organized by the ALI including attending theater, ballet or concert performances and visiting various points of interest in the New York City area. The ALI is a proud member of UCIEP, a U.S. consortium of University and College Intensive English Programs known for its high professional standards and quality English language instruction.
: : Credit Courses

Qualified students in Levels 4 and 5 can enroll in the English for Academic Purposes course and earn academic credit.
: : Student Countries of Origin

The ALI hosts 4,000 students each year from over 75 countries. Recently, students have come to the ALI from Asia (54%), Central and South America/Caribbean (25%), Europe (17%), the Middle East (3%), and Africa (1%).
: : Faculty Qualifications

ALI instructors are all faculty members at New York University and hold at least a master's degree in English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), Applied Linguistics or in a closely related field. The personal and academic qualities and years of teaching experience among ALI instructors make each uniquely qualified to offer meaningful language-learning opportunities to their students. All instructors have lived and traveled abroad, speak at least one foreign language and have extensive training and experience teaching ESL/EFL to students from around the world. ALI instructors are the authors of more than 50 recent texts in language education.
: : Housing

While attending the ALI, students can experience living on-campus in university dormitories. Students living on-campus will be close to classes, campus activities and other students - both American and international. Students are encouraged to arrange housing as early as possible due to the limited amount of space available. Although the university housing is safe and conveniently located, many students prefer to rent or share off-campus apartments. The ALI may introduce private off-campus apartments, however it is the students' responsibility to make their own arrangements. For more information, use the Contact Address to ask the school directly.
: : Surrounding Area

The NYU campus is ideally located in the heart of historic Greenwich Village in downtown New York City. Recognized as one of the world's leading artistic and intellectual communities, Greenwich Village is famous for its contributions to the fine arts, literature and theater, and its laid-back, European style of living. The focal point of the NYU campus, Washington Square, is within minutes of drama and dance theaters, bookstores and record stores, world-class museums and art galleries, coffeehouses, restaurants, nightclubs, funky shops and unique boutiques, and the eclectic neighborhoods of Little Italy and Chinatown. With countless intellectual, cultural and entertainment opportunities in a distinguished academic environment, students at NYU can easily enjoy the advantages of living and studying in New York City.

Greetings from New York City!
I'm pleased to present a profile of our English language program though our ongoing association with ApplyESL.com. This is a unique site which streamlines your program application process.
The American Language Institute (ALI) has been a fixture at New York University since 1945. Our various programs of study, including Intensive English, University Preparation, and Professional Programs, are all closely linked to the University, to our Greenwich Village neighborhood, and to this great city. We want our students to be aware of the vast resources available to them. We have a large, full-time, professionally qualified faculty. And the faculty insures that our programs focus on academic issues and provide inter cultural orientation and learning support. Our international student advisor provides guidance for issues outside of the classroom, including housing, university applications, visa information, and personal plans and problems. Our goal: To enable our students to adapt to a rigorous university life, and to immerse themselves in the culture and the excitement of one the world's most vibrant cities.
We would be pleased if you would join us!
