: About the ESL Program |

Established in 1981, the English Language Institute (ELI) provides outstanding English language instruction to 25 to 70 students from around the world each session. The ELI curriculum is designed to improve students' English communication skills and develop a meaningful understanding of American culture, all the while providing excellent preparation for future academic, business, professional or personal success. ELI students are full members of the Manhattanville College community and are welcome to use the College's libraries, sports facilities, computer laboratories and student amenities. ELI students are also encouraged to participate in the many activities and events organized by student-run clubs, including the International Student Organization (ISO). The ELI is a proud member of UCIEP, a U.S. consortium of University and College Intensive English Programs known for its high professional standards and quality English language instruction.

| The ELI offers several credit courses to students with TOEFL scores of at least 530 (CBT: 197) and matriculated international students needing additional ESL support. |

Faculty Qualifications |

| ELI faculty members are highly-qualified teachers of English as a Second Language (ESL). Each ELI instructor holds a master's degree in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) or in a related field. The majority of ELI instructors have lived and traveled overseas, speak at least one foreign language and have extensive teaching experience, both in the United States and abroad. |

| While attending the ELI, students can experience living on-campus in university dormitories. Students have the opportunity to live in one of the College's four co-educational dormitories, offering double (with roommate) and single occupancy rooms and suites. Students living on-campus will be close to classes, campus activities and other students - both American and international. The ELI may introduce private off-campus apartments, however it is the students' responsibility to make their own arrangements. Students are encouraged to arrange housing as early as possible due to the limited amount of space available. For more information, use the Contact Address to ask the school directly. |

| Manhattanville's campus is nestled in Purchase, New York, a safe, scenic suburban town ideally located in upscale Westchester County and 40 kilometers outside of New York City. With over 24,000 residents, Purchase is home to major international corporations including IBM, Texaco and PepsiCo, along with local art centers, historic sites, numerous recreational facilities, and exciting restaurants and shopping opportunities. When students are interested in traveling outside of Purchase, Manhattanville's campus van transports students to nearby White Plains, a small city offering shopping and dining. The campus bus service also conveniently transports students directly to New York City on weekends and to Manhattan-bound trains on weekdays. Purchase is a quick 30-minute train ride from the heart of New York City and its famous Broadway musicals and theaters, many of the world's foremost art museums, shops and unique boutiques, and excellent restaurants. |
