Intensive English Program
: : About the ESL Program

Lewis and Clark College's intensive English program was established in 1972. Academic English Studies (AES) is an academically oriented intensive English program which assists students in the development of essential language skills, appropriate learning strategies, and cross-cultural awareness. Graduating students of the AES will possess the necessary skills for successful integration into Lewis & Clark undergraduate and graduate programs, as well as those of other universities and businesses. Content-based courses reflect an emphasis on developing a student's ability to meet the cognitive and affective challenges of the academic environment, while developing advanced English language skills. The AES is a proud member of UCIEP, a U.S. consortium of University and College Intensive English Programs known for its high professional standards and quality English language instruction.
: : Credit Courses

Students in AES will earn 24 academic credits. These credits can be used toward their undergraduate degrees.
: : Student Countries of Origin

Students enrolled in English courses have represented more than 45 different countries. Recently, the largest number of students have come to the intensive English program from the United Arab Emirates, Japan, and Korea.
: : Faculty Qualifications

All faculty members are highly-qualified professionals who have extensive experience teaching higher education in the United States and abroad. All instructors hold Master's degrees in Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) or Applied Linguistics. The personal and academic qualities of AES instructors make each uniquely qualified to offer meaningful language-learning opportunities.
: : Housing

While attending the AES, students can experience living on-campus in university dormitories. Students living on-campus will be close to classes, campus activities and other students - both American and international. About 1,000 undergraduate and most AES students live together on the Lewis and Clark campus. The AES may introduce private off-campus apartments, however it is the students' responsibility to make their own arrangements. Students are encouraged to arrange housing as early as possible due to the limited amount of space available. For more information, use the Contact Address to ask the school directly.

Greetings from Lewis & Clark in beautiful Portland, Oregon!
As the Director of the Academic English Studies (AES) program, I welcome you to our profile on ApplyESL.com! In the AES program, I have the opportunity to work with both exceptional faculty and students. I am proud that we have developed a detailed and relevant curriculum that will assist you in preparing for future academic work.

We introduce our students to our library and computer labs, help them practice English using different research tools, and give them many different opportunities to practice their newly-acquired language skills; additionally, we strongly support our students' efforts to integrate themselves into our community. I greatly enjoy working with our Conversation Group and our Friendship Family Coordinators. They bring our students together with families in the Portland area and members of the Lewis & Clark campus community.

AES students have full access to all campus facilities and services, and also enjoy getting to know their American roommates. When you study in the AES program, you will have the opportunity to apply 24 AES course credits toward a Lewis & Clark undergraduate degree. If you have any questions or if you would like more information about our AES program, please contact us. We look forward to meeting you here in Portland!
