: About the ESL Program |

Established in 1954, the English as a Foreign Language (EFL) program provides students with exceptional English language instruction and cultural orientation for future academic, professional or personal success. Students develop their ability to use English fluently and accurately in the areas of reading, writing, speaking and listening in order to actively participate in University classes, in a professional environment or in American daily life. Students have full access to the University's libraries, sports facilities and computer laboratories and are encouraged to join University clubs and activities. The EFL program regularly organizes field trips and social activities for its students including weekly coffee hours, attending professional baseball or basketball games, visiting amusement parks, ice skating, canoeing, hiking in the Virginia Mountains, and trips to Annapolis, Maryland. The English as a Foreign Language program is a proud member of UCIEP, a U.S. consortium of University and College Intensive English Programs known for its high professional standards and quality English language instruction.

| Advanced-level students taking the English for Academic or Professional Purposes course can earn credit towards modern foreign language requirements at the discretion of the Department Chair and Dean. Recognition by other academic institutions of EFL course credits as transfer credits is entirely at their discretion. |

Faculty Qualifications |

| Georgetown EFL faculty members are highly-qualified, experienced professionals. Each instructor holds a master's degree in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) and have extensive experience teaching English in the United States and abroad. EFL instructors use various teaching methods and state-of-the-art technology to effectively develop students' fluency and accuracy in English. |

| While attending the EFL Program, students have the option to live in on-campus dormitories, off-campus residences or enjoy a homestay experience. Students living on-campus will be close to classes, campus activities, and other students - both American and international. For students who prefer a more independent lifestyle, off-campus residences provides more privacy. The Program also arranges homestays for students who want to experience American culture as a member of a family and practice their English. Check the Course Data Page to guarantee your preferred housing option is available for the course to which you will apply. Students are advised to arrange housing as early as possible due to the limited amount of space available. The Program may provide students with information about private off-campus apartments however it is the students' responsibility to make their individual arrangements. For more information, use the Contact Address to ask the school directly. |
