Full-Time Intensive English Program
: : About the ESL Program

Founded in 1981, the English Language Institute (ELI) was established to provide students with outstanding English language instruction and develop a cultural awareness essential to succeed in personal, academic or professional endeavors. The ELI curriculum develops students' reading, writing, listening, speaking and thinking skills and offers special instruction in TOEFL preparation for those students wanting to integrate into the mainstream of higher education. Students receive an identification card and gain full access to the University's libraries, computer and language laboratories with Internet access, free performances at the Center for the Arts, a recreation and sports complex, discounts on student-sponsored dances and parties, and free local bus transportation. A regular program of social activities and field trips is also arranged for ELI students throughout the academic year. The ELI is a proud member of UCIEP, a U.S. consortium of University and College Intensive English Programs known for its high professional standards and quality English language instruction.
: : Credit Courses

Qualified students with appropriate test scores or ELI faculty recommendations may have the opportunity to enroll in academic courses on a part-time basis.
: : Student Countries of Origin

The English Language Institute hosts over 110 students from over 25 countries each session. Recently, students have come to the ELI from Asia (60%), the Middle East (20%), Southeast Asia (10%), Europe (4%), South America (3%) and other countries around the world (3%).
: : Faculty Qualifications

ELI instructors are highly-qualified, experienced professionals. Each instructor holds at least a master's degree in Teaching English as a Second Language, Linguistics, or in a related field. The personal and academic qualities of ELI instructors make each uniquely qualified to offer meaningful language-learning opportunities and to be sympathetic to the needs of their students as they adjust to a new culture.
: : Housing

While attending the ELI, students have the opportunity to live in a dormitory where they can interact with English speakers. Students living on-campus will be close to classes, campus activities and other students - both American and international. Students are encouraged to arrange housing as early as possible due to the limited amount of space available. The ELI may introduce private off-campus apartments, however it is the students' responsibility to make their own arrangements. For more information, use the Contact Address to ask the school directly.
: : Surrounding Area

The George Mason University campus is ideally situated outside the city of Fairfax, Virginia among groves of trees and park-like recreational sites. The University's close proximity to both the picturesque countryside and lively urban areas provides both students and residents the best of both worlds. To the west of Fairfax lies the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains, a perfect place for hiking, camping, fishing and, in the winter, skiing. On the other hand, just 30 minutes to the east of Fairfax is Washington, D.C., the nation's capital and the heart of American government, research, culture and business. An easy-to-use transportation system provides quick and easy access to local historical sites, museums, galleries, unique shops and popular attractions.
: : About the College/University

Greetings from Virginia!
Hello from the English Language Institute at George Mason University and welcome to our profile on ApplyESL.com. Since 1981 the ELI has provided excellent English language instruction in small classes with personal attention from talented, experienced instructors. Outside of the classroom, ELI students live and study in beautiful Northern Virginia, and are only 45 minutes from downtown Washington, D.C. by bus and subway. ELI students tell me they like the friendly atmosphere at the ELI and the help and encouragement they get from their instructors. Most importantly, they appreciate the serious efforts of the faculty and staff to help them learn the English they need to achieve their goals. They also enjoy our beautiful campus and the many facilities that are available such as libraries, computer labs, sports facilities, and theaters. If you have questions, please contact us.
