Intensive English Course
: : About the ESL Program

Established in 1979, the English Language Institute (ELI) provides high caliber English language instruction to over 70 students from around the world each session. The ELI curriculum is designed to enable qualified international students to integrate into the mainstream of higher education, providing the necessary language and academic skills to comfortably function in American daily life and to succeed in an American university. In addition to enabling students to meet their academic and cultural objectives, the ELI also helps Eastern Washington University to create a culturally diverse and international academic environment. ELI students gain full access to Eastern Washington University's campus facilities and activities including theater, dance and music performances, student associations and clubs, an Olympic-size indoor swimming pool, outstanding athletic facilities and over 150 computers with Internet access. The ELI is a proud member of UCIEP, a U.S. consortium of University and College Intensive English Programs known for its high professional standards and quality English language instruction.
: : Credit Courses

Students in the advanced level (Level 5) may earn University credit by taking ELI classes such as Writing for Academic Purposes, Reading for Academic Purposes, University Seminar and Research Paper.
: : Student Countries of Origin

In recent years, students have come to the ELI from Japan (40%), Taiwan (15%), Korea (15%), South America (15%), the Middle East (7%) and from South Asia and Europe.
: : Faculty Qualifications

The ELI instructors are highly-qualified, experienced professionals who are all Eastern Washington University faculty members. All instructors hold master's degrees and have extensive experience teaching English as a Second Language (ESL)to students both in the United States and abroad. The ELI faculty are regularly available outside of the classroom for advising, help and discussion.
: : Housing

While attending the ELI, students can experience living on-campus in University dormitories. Students living on-campus will be close to classes, campus activities, and other students - both American and international. Students are encouraged to apply for housing as early as possible due to the limited amount of space available. The ELI may provide students with information about private off-campus apartments, however, it is the students' responsibility to make their own arrangements. For more information, use the Contact Address to ask the school directly.
: : Surrounding Area

The Eastern Washington University campus is nestled in the comfortable, safe and friendly town of Cheney, home to 9,400 residents. Students can explore and enjoy Cheney's wide array of services, facilities and unique boutiques while in the comfort of a pleasant, secure environment. World-class skiing, beautiful fir tree covered mountain ranges and more than 76 lakes are within a short drive from the EWU campus. Washington state's third-largest city, Spokane, is only 24 kilometers from the EWU campus. Spokane offers both its visitors and 400,000 residents a full range of social, cultural, recreational and shopping opportunities and is identified as the region's heart of business, transportation and health services.
