: : About the ESL Program

The English Language Center (ELC) at Drexel University was established in 1989 to provide students from around the world with outstanding English language instruction for academic, professional or personal success. The ELC curriculum is designed to provide students with the academic skills essential to succeed at Drexel and other universities and to develop professional skills for the 21st century. The ELC encourages intercultural understanding, provides support and guidance for issues outside of the classroom and builds students' confidence to adapt to university life and American culture. ELC students gain full access to Drexel University's campus facilities and can enjoy using the athletic center, campus libraries, computer labs, and wireless Internet access. A program of weekly social activities is arranged for ELC students and can include city tours, barbecues, canoeing and trips to Washington, D.C.and New York City. The ELC is a proud member of UCIEP, a U.S. consortium of University and College Intensive English Programs known for its high professional standards and quality English language instruction.
: : Credit Courses

Advanced-level students may combine English study with part-time university course work upon the approval of an ELC advisor.
: : Student Countries of Origin

The English Language Center hosts students from more than 40 different countries around the world. The majority of the ELC student population comes from Asia, followed by Latin America, Europe, Africa and the Middle East.
: : Faculty Qualifications

ELC instructors are highly-qualified, experienced professionals. Each instructor holds at least a master's degree in ESL, linguistics or in a related field while some have earned doctoral degrees. Instructors at the ELC are actively involved in local and national professional organizations and regularly present papers at educational conferences. Several instructors have published ESL-related textbooks and articles.
: : Housing

While attending the ELC, students can experience living on-campus in the Drexel World House Dormitory featuring shared rooms, a kitchen and laundry facilities. Students living on-campus will be close to classes, campus activities, and other students - both American and international. Students have the option to live off-campus at the nearby International House, a 15-minute walk from the ELC. Off-campus housing offers privacy for students who prefer a more independent lifestyle. Homestays are also available for students who want to experience American culture as a member of a family and practice their English. The ELC may introduce private off-campus apartments; however students must make their own arrangements. It is best to arrange housing as early as possible due to the limited amount of space available. For more information, use the Contact Address to ask the school directly.
: : Surrounding Area

The Drexel campus is ideally situated in the University City area, a growing residential and educational community located just minutes by bus or subway from Philadelphia's historic, artistic and cultural Center City district. Philadelphia was the United States capital from 1790-1800 and is one of the nation's most historical cities. With a population of 1.8 million people, Philadelphia is the 5th largest city in the United States and is recognized as the safest among the nation's 12 largest cities. Visitors and residents can visit a variety of cultural attractions including the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Pennsylvania Ballet, the Philadelphia Zoo, the oldest in America, and over 50 different museums. Sports lovers cheer on Philadelphia's professional baseball, basketball, football and hockey teams throughout the year. Philadelphia's location offers a temperate climate and four distinct seasons. Spring and fall are especially pleasant due to the warm winds off the Atlantic Ocean. The downtown Amtrak station provides easy travel to New York City, Washington, D.C. and Boston and the nearby Pocono Mountains and New Jersey shore are less than a 2-hour drive from the Drexel campus.
: : About the College/University

Founded in 1891, Drexel University is the second largest private institution of higher education in Philadelphia. It is comprised of three campuses that include schools of medicine, nursing, and public health. Drexel's University City campus is home to seven colleges including arts and sciences, information science and technology, media arts and design, engineering, business, and law. Drexel has a reputation for quality and is recognized particularly for its excellence in cooperative education (co-op), in which students alternate periods of full-time employment with their studies.
