: About the ESL Program |

Established in 1911, the American Language Program (ALP) is one of the oldest English as a Second Language (ESL) programs in the United States. Each year, 2,000 students, international visitors and business and professional people from around the world come to the ALP to improve their English language skills. The mission of the ALP is to provide challenging, high-quality language learning opportunities for both full-time language students and international students already admitted into Columbia University. The ALP course work is designed to develop students' grammatical skills, fluency and pronunciation, listening and reading comprehension, and writing ability. Outside of the classroom, students are encouraged to participate in University activities and enjoy the many cultural and social events in New York City. Theater nights, walking tours through New York City's different neighborhoods and visits to families in surrounding communities are also arranged by the ALP. The ALP is a proud member of UCIEP, a U.S. consortium of University and College Intensive English Programs known for its high professional standards and quality English language instruction.

| Students placed in the highest English ability level (Level 10) on the ALP English Placement Test may enroll in College Composition, a course in advanced writing, and earn credit towards a Bachelor's degree. Students who want to attend an academic program in addition to the ALP may apply to take selected University courses once they have developed an advanced level of English. |

The American Language Program hosts over 2,000 students from around the world every year. Recently, students from Argentina, Brazil, China, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Korea, Russia, Spain, Switzerland, Taiwan and Turkey account for 90% of the ALP student population. The remaining 10% come from over 60 other countries.

Faculty Qualifications |

| ALP instructors are all faculty members at Columbia University and hold either a master's or doctorate degree in Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL), Applied Linguistics or in a closely related field. The Program has one of the largest full-time faculties among all English language programs in the United States. All ALP faculty members have lived and traveled abroad and speak several languages. Additionally, ALP instructors are active in local and national professional organizations, write textbooks for English learners, publish articles and are regularly consulted for their expertise and experience in the ESL field. |

| While attending the ALP, students have the opportunity to live in on-campus university dormitories. Students living on-campus will be close to classes, campus activities and other students - both American and international. Students must apply for housing through the ALP as early as possible due to the limited amount of space available. The ALP may provide students with information about available private off-campus apartments however it is the students' responsibility to make their own arrangements. For more information, use the Contact Address to ask the school directly. |

| Columbia University is located in vibrant New York City, the center of cultural diversity, art, world-class entertainment and finance. The University campus is ideally situated on Manhattan's Upper West Side, in a dynamic, comfortable neighborhood known as Morningside Heights. Home to many Columbia students and faculty members, Morningside Heights offers its residents a chance to relax and enjoy some quiet time in its many casual coffee shops, outdoor cafes, bookstores and the nearby Riverside Park. Columbia is a short subway, bus or taxi ride from New York City's famous Broadway musicals and theaters, outstanding art museums, shops and unique boutiques, and excellent restaurants. Although Columbia's campus is graced by great, green lawns and age-old shade trees, it is truly an urban university at heart. The major cities of Boston, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. are all easily accessible by car or train and are less than three and a half hours away. |
