Intensive ESL Program
Full-Time ESL Program

The Full-Time ESL Program is offered throughout the year and is ideal for those students able to dedicate time to their English studies. Students enrolled in the program receive 25 hours of classroom instruction each week. The program is offered at 8 levels of instruction, from Beginner to Upper-Advanced. Upon students' arrival at Archer College, they are given an English language skills test to help determine the level best-suited to their ability.

Students at all levels of instruction improve their English skills through communication and skills-building exercises during the mornings and specific language skills during the afternoons. Communication skills are effectively developed by active listening and speaking in classroom discussions, working with classmates on group presentations and projects, studying grammar and vocabulary with textbook exercises, and studying "real life" assignments by practicing English in Canadian shops and businesses. Afternoons are spent studying pronunciation and accent reduction, learning vocabulary, idioms and expressions, developing listening and speaking skills for accuracy and practicing conversation for fluency building. In addition to attending their core English skills, students also have the opportunity to study in special-interest elective classes to complement their regular studies. Depending on student numbers during that session, students can study such topics as: Short Stories; Reading and Writing Skills; Travel and Survival Skills; Canadian Culture; Music, Movies and Television; and Vocabulary through Games.

As an added benefit, students intending to study in a degree program after achieving an advanced level of English have the option of entering Archer College's fully-accredited university transfer program without requiring a TOEFL exam. Archer College's collaboration with select universities provides its graduates the opportunity to continue their studies and complete an undergraduate degree in Canada. These universities include: Royal Roads University; Cape Breton University; and Athabasca University.

Classroom sizes range from 8 to 10 students with a maximum of 12 students per class. Every effort is made to keep classes at an ideal size for effective English language instruction.
