The Full-Time English as a Second Language (ESL) Program offers six 8-week sessions throughout the year. Students enrolled in the program receive 25 hours of classroom instruction each week. Classes are held during the week with classes on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday held from 9:00am - 2:30pm and on Fridays from 9:00am - 12:15pm. Friday afternoons provide students with the opportunity to participate in program-organized activities to encourage students to use English in a natural setting while learning about Canadian culture.
The program offers 9 levels of English classes, from beginning to advanced. Upon arrival at the program, students are given an English placement test to help determine the level best-suited to their ability. After successful completion of each level, students are awarded certificates while academic awards are given to those students studying at the highest levels.
Students at all levels of instruction study from a comprehensive curriculum designed to hone their English skills in the areas of speaking, listening, reading, writing and grammar; however, the program primarily focuses on speaking and listening to increase students' ability to engage in English conversation. Outside of the classroom, students work on classroom assignments in the program's state-of-the-art computer labs, stay fit at the Bow Valley College fitness center, receive expert advice in academic planning from the program's counselors, or join one of the many social acitivites organized by the program.
Class sizes generally range from 10 to 15 students per class. Every effort is made to keep classes at an ideal size for effective English language instruction. |
