The American Language Program is offered in 7-week sessions throughout the year. Students enrolled in the program receive 20 hours of classroom instruction per week. The program is offered at 6 levels of instruction. Upon their arrival at the ALC, students are required to take a series of placement tests to help determine the level best-suited to their ability. Once students are placed in ability levels following their tests, the ALC further evaluates each student to ensure they are correctly placed in the appropriate level.
At all levels of instruction, the program's curriculum focuses on the four key areas of English language study: Grammar and Structure; Listening and Speaking; Reading and Writing; and American English Pronunciation. For those students who successfully complete Level 6, they may meet the English requirement to study in most programs at Bloomfield College by passing the English proficiency exam. Students' classroom work is complemented outside of the classroom by free one-on-one tutoring sessions, a state-of-the-art language laboratory and The English Conversation Partner program. The aim of the conversation program is to provide a natural setting for students to practice their spoken English and have the opportunity to interact with other Bloomfield College students.
To further complement students' studies, the ALC organizes a wide range of off-campus activities for students to practice their newly-acquired English skills in a natural setting while experiencing American culture first-hand. Past popular activities included seeing Broadway musicals and plays, attending Yankees baseball games and weekend trips to Boston and Washington, D.C. Students also take advantage of the activities and events available on the Bloomfield College campus by watching theatre ensemble performances, seeing student exhibits at the on-campus art gallery, and listening to student-produced poetry readings.
Classroom sizes are limited to no more than 8 students per class. Every effort is made to keep classes at an ideal size for effective English language instruction. |
