Students enrolled in IAP receive more than 24 hours of classroom instruction each week. The IAP offers instruction at 6 levels of English proficiency, ranging from beginning to advanced. Upon students' arrival at the ALCI, they are given an English placement test to help determine the level best-suited to their ability. Designed to prepare international students for study at an American college or university, the IAP curriculum develops students' skills in the areas of reading, vocabulary, academic writing, grammar, public speaking, and test preparation. Students at the advanced-level may enroll in CSU San Marcos university courses with American students and earn transferable academic credit. Operating as an academic preparation program, the ALCI offers students special services to help them enroll at an American college or university. Academic advisors are on-hand to assist students in researching colleges or universities pertinent to their interests, and applying to the degree programs. Additionally, the ALCI provides TOEFL equivalency for students enrolling in an undergraduate degree program at Cal State San Marcos so long as they successfully complete the IAP with a B grade. ALCI students have plenty of opportunities to practice their newly-acquired English skills outside of the classroom, as well, whether through the field trips and activities organized by the ALCI, playing in CSUSM intramural sports teams, or joining the Conversation Partners Program to meet with Cal State San Marcos students to practice their English conversational skills and learn more about American culture. Class sizes range from 10 to 12 students. Every effort is made to keep classes at an ideal size to promote effective English language instruction.
