The Intensive English Program offers 16-week sessions during the fall and spring semesters and an 8-week session during the summer. Students enrolled in the program receive 22 hours of instruction per week.
The program offers 6 levels, from beginning to advanced. Upon arrival, students take a placement exam to determine the level best-suited to their ability. Upon completion of each level, students receive progress reports showing grades, attendance figures, and performance evaluations. Students in good academic standing who receive 500 or higher on the TOEFL before leaving the ELI are awarded Certificates of Proficiency while students who leave the ELI before earning a 500 are awarded Certificates of Attendance.
Classes in all skill areas (listening/speaking, reading, writing, structure) are offered at all levels. Students can attend reading and computer laboratories during their free time to complement their studies. Advanced-level students may, with the approval of the appropriate academic officials and the ELI director, attend an Oklahoma State University class on a non-credit basis. An Institutional TOEFL is administered at the end of each semester.
A regular program of social activities is arranged for ELI students and can include American holiday celebrations, picnics, and short field trips. The highlight of each semester is an out-of-state trip to points of historical and cultural interest. This unique opportunity to expand cultural awareness under the guidance of the ELI faculty members is considered an integral part of the students' educational experience.
Classroom size ranges from 10 to 15 students per class. Every effort is made to keep classes at an ideal size for effective English language instruction. |
