The Improving Oral Fluency Program is designed for students with advanced English language skills to enhance their speaking and listening abilities. The Program offers 4, 6, and 10-week sessions throughout the year. Students enrolled in the Program receive 24 hours of in-class instruction per week.
The Program offers 1 level of English classes at the advanced level. On registration day, students are given an English proficiency test in order to demonstrate their required advanced English proficiency. If students' test results exhibit high intermediate or lower proficiency, the Program will advise students to instead attend the Intensive English Program.
The Program is ideal for business professionals, students preparing to attend an American college or university, or for individuals wishing to improve their spoken English. The intensive curriculum focuses on developing students' oral skills and includes classes such as Oral Skills Development, Pronunciation, and Grammar for Oral Fluency; students also practice their newly-acquired English skills in the Language Laboratory. As part of the curriculum, students also select an elective class to study topics including Advanced Vocabulary, Public Speaking, GRE/GMAT Preparation, Conversation, English through Drama, and Academic Skills. Students attending the 10-week session may be allowed to attend regular UCR classes and earn transferable University of California credit. The institutional TOEFL and TOEIC examinations are offered to students every quarter at the UCR Extension Center.
Outside of the classroom, students attending the 10-week session are encouraged to participate in the private or group conversation partner program to practice their English conversational skills and develop a deeper understanding of American culture.
The average class size is 15 students per class. Every effort is made to keep classes at an ideal size for effective English language instruction. |
