The Intensive English Program offers two 16-week sessions during the fall and spring and one 5-week session during the summer term. Students enrolled in the full time program receive a minimum of 18 hours of in-class instruction each week.
The Program offers 4 levels of English classes: Elementary, Intermediate, Advanced, and Academic Purposes. During orientation, students take a placement test to examine their writing, listening, grammar, and speaking skills in order to help determine the level best-suited to their ability
The Program's comprehensive curriculum is taught by well-trained instructors to fully develop students' English language skills and cultural orientation. Students in all levels of instruction study reading and writing, listening and speaking, grammar, and special topics (such as TOEFL prep, pronunciation, or American culture classes). Conversation Partners, native English speaking students of the University, are provided for each HELP student to enhance their spoken communications skills. Students studying in the Advanced and Academic Purposes levels may enroll in academic classes at SUNY New Paltz while also taking English classes in HELP. HELP students are considered regular University students so they have full access to all campus facilities, activities and programs. HELP also offers extra cultural activities and field trips to enrich students' American experience, including visits to New York City and other tourist attractions of our area.
Class sizes generally range from 7 to 17 students per class. Every effort is made to keep classes at an ideal size for effective English language instruction.
