The Intensive English Program offers five 8-week sessions throughout the academic year. Students enrolled in the Program receive 18 hours of in-class instruction each week as well as attend several elective classes for an additional 3 hours per week.
The Program offers 6 levels of English classes, from basic to advanced; basic-level students have little or no knowledge of English while advanced-level students are typically ready for university courses taught in English. During orientation, students take a placement test to examine their writing, listening, grammar, and speaking skills in order to help determine the level best-suited to their ability. Students completing the AECP Advanced 1 and 2 levels receive certificates of completion. Students at any other level can also request a certificate.
The Program's comprehensive curriculum features core courses emphasizing Listening/Speaking and Reading/Writing. In addition to attending 18 hours of core classes, intermediate and advanced-level students also choose from many 3-hour elective courses to study areas such as grammar, TOEFL and TOEIC Preparation, conversation, pronunciation, business writing, decisions and communication, English through Music of the Beatles, and English through American Art. AECP offers both the institutional TOEFL and the TOEIC exam five times each year. Outside of the classroom, students are encouraged to use the modern AECP computer lab to work on classroom assignments, send e-mails, and surf the Internet. During the August, January, and June sessions, AECP students have the opportunity to be matched with ASU students through the Conversation Partners program and practice their English in an informal setting.
Class sizes generally range from 12 to 16 students per class. Every effort is made to keep classes at an ideal size for effective English language instruction. |
