Intensive English Program

The Intensive English Program offers four 7-week sessions and two 5-week summer sessions throughout the academic year. Students enrolled in the Program receive 20-25 hours of in-class instruction each week.

The Program offers 6 levels of English classes, from beginning to advanced. During orientation, students take a language proficiency test to help determine the level best-suited to their ability. Students' academic performances are continually evaluated and grade reports are issued at the end of each session. The ALCI awards three types of certificates to recognize student achievement: attendance, completion, and proficiency.

The Program's comprehensive curriculum features core courses emphasizing reading, writing, listening, and speaking. In addition to attending regular classes, students can also select from various elective courses to study areas such as pronunciation, oral fluency, American film, and other special interest topics. Most sessions offer TOEFL Preparation classes that students enrolled in the IEP can take at a discounted rate. CSU, Chico is a testing center for the international TOEFL and will start administering the new internet-based test (TOEFL iBT) in September 2005. ALCI teaches the skills that students will need to be successful on this test.

Conditional Admission to CSU, Chico may be available to academically-qualified ALCI students that have not yet met the university's English proficiency requirement. Students will maintain full-time enrollment at ALCI until they are admitted to CSU, Chico for university-level coursework.

Outside of the classroom, students have the opportunity to experience American culture first-hand by meeting with conversation partners, joining one or more of the 200 student-run clubs available on the CSU, Chico campus and participating in social, service, or religious organizations, as well as playing in intramural sports teams, and attending concerts, movies, plays or sporting events.

The average class size is 8 to 10 students with a maximum of 15 students. Every effort is made to keep classes at an ideal size for effective English language instruction.
