The Intensive English Program offers three semesters of instruction each year: two 15-week sessions in the fall and spring and one 10-week session during the summer. Students enrolled in the 15-week session receive 21 hours of in-class instruction per week while student enrolled in the 10-week summer session receive 34 hours of classroom instruction.
The Program offers 3 levels of English classes: basic, intermediate, and advanced. At the beginning of orientation and each subsequent semester, students take the English Language Proficiency Exam (ELPE) to help determine the level best-suited to their ability.
Students enrolled in the Program take a combination of classes to develop the four skill areas of listening, speaking, reading, and writing; extensive grammar and vocabulary development are also incorporated among these classes. Courses including reading, vocabulary, and composition are taught separately at the intermediate and advanced levels. In addition to attending regular classes, students also take an American Culture and Customs course to explore the culture and customs in the United States by studying different facets of American society, including drama, sports, art, and music. To enhance their English studies, students have full access to the well-equipped language laboratory outside of class. A full range of language development materials, including computer assisted instruction, are available to students at all levels. Outside of the classroom, students are encouraged to participate in cultural activities organized by the ELI to experience the richness of the American lifestyle and to immerse themselves in the English language.
The average class size is 12 to 15 students per class. Every effort is made to keep classes at an ideal size for effective English language instruction. |
