The Intensive Program offers five 7-week sessions throughout the academic year. Students enrolled in the Program receive 28 hours of in-class instruction and can participate in more than 45 hours of interactive English opportunities each week.
The Program offers 5 levels of English classes, from beginning through advanced. At the beginning of the session, students take a placement test to help determine the level best-suited to their ability. Students in Levels 1 - 4 attend five classes daily, Monday to Thursday, to learn: Conversation/Pronunciation, Listening, Writing, Reading and Language Laboratory. Level 5 students attend 4 classes daily, Monday to Thursday, to study: Composition, Library Skills and Research, American Literature, and College Orientation Skills. EELI does not train students to take the TOEFL; instead, study skills and test-taking abilities play a critical part in the program, preparing students for academic credit course work, especially for students in the intermediate and advanced levels. EELI also offers students computer-assisted instruction, as well as observation of EKU classes to develop their studying and notetaking skills.
Students continue to develop their English skills outside of the classroom by attending the EELI Tutoring Lab. This Lab offers students free tutoring sessions nine hours weekly, as well as other activities involving private study, conversation practice or using the audio/visual resources. Usually on Fridays, students in all levels participate together in cultural activities and trips on-campus and in the surrounding areas in order to acquire a deeper understanding of American culture and society outside of the classroom. These activities help students improve all language skills, both academically and non-academically.
The average class size is 8 students. Every effort is made to keep classes at an ideal size for effective English language instruction. |
