The Intensive English Program offers two 15-week sessions beginning in September and January and a 10-week session in June. Students enrolled in the Program receive 18 hours of in-class instruction per week in order to develop students' English language fluency, as well as improve their academic and Internet/computer skills. Classes meet Monday through Thursday, ranging from 8:00 am to 5:30 pm.
The Program offers 4 levels of English classes, from beginning to advanced. At the beginning of the semester, each student is assigned an advisor (a full-time faculty member) to receive guidance and support during their time studying at the L.E.A.P. program. Students in all levels of instruction study the fundamentals of English reading, writing, grammar, listening, vocabulary and oral communication. An optional TOEFL Preparation course is also available for students in the advanced level.
Outside of the classroom, students have the opportunity to experience American culture first-hand by participating in programs organized by the Program. Past programs include: the International Table, bringing both L.E.A.P. and Marshall students together to share language and cultural information; Elementary & Secondary School Visitation Program, allowing L.E.A.P. students to visit local schools and share their culture with children in the community; and the College Lecture Visitation Program, giving L.E.A.P. students the opportunity to visit undergraduate and graduate classes on-campus.
The average class size is 12 students with a maximum of 15. Every effort is made to keep classes at an ideal size for effective English language instruction. |
