The English as a Second Language program offers 5, 7, 8, 10 and 16-week sessions throughout the year; students receive 20 hours of in-class instruction per week.
The program offers 4 levels of English classes, ranging from beginning to advanced. The beginning courses teach students basic vocabulary and the foundations of English grammar, along with practical communication skills used in everyday situations. The curriculum for the intermediate and advanced levels train students in the four main areas of the English language (writing, listening, speaking and reading) for academic purposes. Elective courses in areas of special interest are also available to students and may include topics such as computers, business English, and American culture. These courses are designed to develop students' English language skills required in an academic setting and to introduce them to teaching styles practiced in the United States. Students in the advanced level may also take 3 to 6 credit courses at the University while completing their English studies. TOEFL workshops are offered three times a year for those students looking for extra preparation before taking the TOEFL test. Students who successfully complete the advanced level may enter Nevada universities at the undergraduate level without taking the TOEFL.
Small, interactive classes are emphasized. Class sizes range from 10 to 12 students per class. Every effort is made to keep classes at an ideal size for effective English instruction. |
