The Program operates on a quarter system, offering four 10-week sessions of Intensive English classes per year. All full-time students receive 20 hours of in-class instruction per week. Students have the opportunity to develop their reading, writing, speaking and listening skills at each level and in every course. Field trips and out-of-the classroom opportunities and assignments are regular additions to classes and are led by UESL teachers. Additionally, students can use the University's well-equipped computer laboratories for their individual use, English practice, to explore the Internet or for word-processing.
The curriculum offers five levels of English classes. Each level includes three different areas of English study. The Oral Communication class concentrates on listening and speaking skills. The academic-focused class practices reading, writing and grammar skills. The Elective class allows students to study TOEFL preparation, business, American literature, computers, filmmaking, speaking workshop, travel or volunteering in America. Students in the highest level (Level 5) attend a regular undergraduate university class as part of their ESL schedule.
Students have an opportunity to be paired with native English speakers for additional practice outside of class. Conversation Partners sometimes do other activities besides practicing English such as going to restaurants, attending parties, visiting the American partner's hometown or studying together. Additionally, the Program advises its students about American colleges and universities and helps them during the application process each quarter.
Class sizes have a maximum of 17 students with an average of 12 students per class. Efforts are made to keep the class size small for effective English language instruction. |
