The Intensive English Program operates on the quarter system, offering four 10-week sessions throughout the year; two additional 5-week sessions are offered during the summer. Students enrolled in the Program receive 21 hours per week of in-class instruction in order to meet their individual educational and career objectives.
The Program offers 7 levels of English classes, from high-beginner to advanced. Upon students' arrival at the ALP, they are required to take an English placement test to help determine the level best-suited to their ability. Each student is assigned a personal faculty advisor to help them ease into their new environment, assist in selecting appropriate courses and move their students into a university credit program. The ALP curriculum consists of four components: Structure, Skills, Content, and TOEFL Workshop. In the Structure class, students learn the basics of reading, writing, and grammar in preparation for future university study. Students in the Skills class focus on their individual needs in the areas of reading, listening, speaking, and writing. The Content class allows students to practice learning typical first-year university content including history, cultural studies and arts appreciation. The TOEFL Workshop enables students to develop their TOEFL preparation and test-taking skills. During each session, ALP students have the opportunity to take the institutional TOEFL to practice their newly-developed skills.
Through the "Service Learning Project," ALP students are offered weekly volunteer positions in local schools and social service agencies to experience working in an American workplace while also making a valuable contribution to the community. The "Fun Trips Program" allow students to explore the many interesting places in the surrounding Bay Area while using their English skills. Students enjoy trips to San Francisco, Sonoma Valley, and Monterey, Marine World, Great America Amusement Park, shopping, and attending professional sports events. Additionally, ALP students have the opportunity to meet with university students once a week through the "Speaking Partners Program" to practice their English conversational skills and learn more about American culture.
Small, interactive classes are emphasized to ensure full student participation. Class sizes range from 15 to 19 students per class. Every effort is made to keep classes at an ideal size for effective English language instruction. |
