Academic and TOEFL Preparation
American Communication and Culture Program

The Program offers 3- and 6-week sessions during the summer. Regardless of program length, students enrolled in the program receive 20 hours of classroom instruction each week.

The program generally offers 9 levels of English classes, from beginning to advanced. Upon arrival at school, students take a Placement Test and are interviewed to help determine the level best-suited to their ability.

This program is designed for students with existing business experience to improve their English skills for valuable professional development. Practical instruction and active participation in classroom exercises help students develop the confidence to use business English effectively, avoid miscommunication in a business setting, use current professional language and vocabulary, and gain practical experience to improve their presentation skills.

Students also have the opportunity to select from a wide range of business-related elective classes to study areas including Active Listening, Cross Cultural Communication, Effective Meetings, Current Topics in Business, Entrepreneurship, and Tech Talk. Students at the advanced level have the beneficial opportunity to enroll in SJSU undergraduate courses while attending SAL.

Outside of the classroom, weekly field trips to local businesses and points of interest are arranged for students to immerse themselves in the business culture of Silicon Valley.

Class sizes generally range from 5 to 15 students per class. Every effort is made to keep classes at an ideal size for effective English language instruction.
