The Academic and TOEFL Preparation program is offered in 9- and 17-week sessions throughout the academic year. Regardless of program length, students enrolled in the program receive 20 hours of classroom instruction each week.
The program offers 8 levels of English classes, from beginning to advanced. Upon arrival at SAL, students take a Placement Test and are interviewed to help determine the level best-suited to their ability.
The program's curriculum is designed to develop the academic English skills essential to gain admission and to succeed at an American university or college while also placing emphasis on improving students' TOEFL scores. Core instruction develops students' four basic skill areas, including speaking, writing, reading, and listening. Students also have the opportunity to select from a wide range of elective classes to study areas including conversation, test preparation, and pronunciation. Advanced-level students have the beneficial opportunity to enroll in SJSU undergraduate courses while attending SAL. Students complement their classroom instruction by attending academic advising workshops and participating in regular campus activities.
TOEFL test-taking strategies taught to students are a key component to the program. Putting their acquired test skills into practice, actual paper-based Institutional TOEFL examinations are administered to students as part of the program.
Class sizes generally range from 10 to 18 students per class. Every effort is made to keep classes at an ideal size for effective English language instruction. |
