The Full-Time Intensive English Program follows the Ohio University academic calendar and operates on a quarter system, offering four 10-week sessions per year during the winter, spring, summer and fall seasons. Students enrolled in the Program receive 20 hours of in-class instruction per week in addition to assigned and optional computer work, reading, audio/visual laboratory assignments, weekly general information lectures, and meetings with language partners. Classes meet regularly on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. On Wednesdays, students work individually in computer, reading, and listening laboratories, meet with instructors to work on individual needs or take part in special projects or activities.
The Program offers 4 levels of English classes, from elementary to the "Support English" level. Upon students' arrival at the OPIE, they are required to take an institutional TOEFL and writing proficiency test to help determine the level best-suited to their ability. Students are evaluated by their instructors at the end of each 10-week session to determine their progress. Students also receive course and teacher evaluations used for future placement.
Elementary and intermediate-level students develop their reading, writing, speaking, listening, communication, and grammar skills by attending core classes which meet three hours per day and support classes which meet two hours per day. Advanced-level students attend classes designed to prepare them for regular academic work, emphasizing reading, composition, note-taking and oral presentation skills. In addition to the regular curriculum, advanced-level students also choose from a wide variety of elective classes to study topics such as Public Speaking, Intercultural Communication, American Culture, Social Issues through American Films, Pronunciation and U.S. Cities: New York and Los Angeles. At the "Support English" level, students taking full-time Ohio University classes can further refine their English with special OPIE classes in academic writing, oral communication skills and teaching assistant (TA) training.
The Conversation Partners Program gives OPIE students the opportunity to meet with American students attending Ohio University to practice their English conversational skills and to develop a richer understanding of American culture. These conversation partners meet in an informal setting at least one hour per week to talk with one another and participate in social activities together.
Small, interactive classes are emphasized to ensure full student participation. Class sizes range from 10 to 12 students with an average of 11 students per class. Every effort is made to keep classes at an ideal size for effective English language instruction. |
