The Intensive Course in American English and Orientation offers two 14-week sessions in the fall and spring and two 6-week sessions during the summer season to students who wish to learn English effectively and accurately in the shortest possible time. Students enrolled in the Program receive 22 hours of in-class instruction per week and practice the fundamentals of speaking, listening, reading and writing.
The Program offers 6 levels of English classes, from beginning to advanced. There are nine ranks of instruction over the 6 levels: Level 1 (beginning, Rank 10), Level 2 (low intermediate, Ranks 20-30), Level 3 (intermediate to high intermediate, Ranks 40-60), Level 4 (low advanced, Rank 70), Level 5 (advanced, Rank 80) and Level 6 (advanced, Rank 90). At the beginning of each session, students take an English proficiency test to help determine the level best-suited to their ability. The test assesses students' grammar, vocabulary, listening comprehension, writing and speaking skills. Additionally, students have a personal interview with an ALI faculty member for counseling purposes and to select appropriate courses.
In addition to attending the Program's classes, students are also introduced to the United States' language, life and culture outside of the classroom by attending theater, ballet and concert performances, as well as visiting American families in the surrounding community. Several times during the semester, the ALI organizes field trips for its students to explore the New York City area including the United Nations, the New York Stock Exchange, the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, and New York's world-class museums.
Small, interactive classes are emphasized to ensure full student participation. Class sizes range from 13 to 17 students per class. Every effort is made to keep classes at an ideal size for effective English language instruction. |
