The Intensive English Program offers two 14-week sessions in the fall and spring, four 7-week sessions in the fall, winter and spring, and two 5-week sessions during the summer season. Students enrolled in the Program receive 22.5 hours of in-class instruction per week in order to improve their reading, writing, speaking, listening and grammar skills, as well as develop a better understanding of American culture.
The Program offers 4 levels of English classes, from beginning to advanced. At the beginning of each session, students take an English proficiency test to help determine the level best-suited to their ability. Intermediate and advanced-level students have the opportunity to attend the Program's TOEFL preparation course in order to learn test-taking strategies and develop both the skills and the confidence essential to earn successful TOEFL scores. The Program also offers additional courses such as ESL through American Culture, in which students learn about American culture in a realistic manner through music, film, literature and history, and Cultural Applications, a course designed to strengthen students' English skills and apply them to everyday situations, both on and off-campus.
Small, interactive classes are emphasized to ensure full student participation. Class sizes range from 8 to 15 students with an average of 11 students per class. Every effort is made to keep classes at an ideal size for effective English language instruction. |
