The Intensive English Program operates on a semester system, offering two 16-week sessions in the fall and spring and one 8-week session during the summer. Students enrolled in the Program receive 20 hours of in-class instruction per week. Completing homework and laboratory assignments in addition to participating in campus events are requirements for students throughout the day.
The Program offers 6 levels of English classes, from basic to advanced. At the beginning of each session, students take an English proficiency test to help determine the level best-suited to their ability. The Program's curriculum focuses on three main areas to help students acquire the ability to: use English fluently and accurately in speaking, listening, reading and writing, to communicate effectively in spoken and written English, and to gain cultural awareness and understand the distinctive qualities of American culture when compared with students' own cultures. The Program's additional features include full access to the EFL Language and EFL Computer Labs, a TOEFL Preparation Course, the College Application Program, Pronunciation workshops and tutorials, and a weekly lecture series. Traditional in-class activities at all levels of instruction are complimented with field work to practice students' recently acquired language skills in the surrounding community in addition to businesses, United States government agencies and international organizations in the Washington, D.C. area.
Small, interactive classes are emphasized to ensure full student participation. Class sizes range from 12 to 15 students per class. Every effort is made to keep classes at an ideal size for effective English language instruction. |
