The Intensive English Course offers three 11-week sessions in the winter, spring and fall and one 8-week session during the summer. Students enrolled in the Program receive 18 to 20 hours of in-class and language laboratory instruction per week to develop the academic and language skills essential to succeed in an American university.
The Program offers 5 levels of English classes, from beginning to advanced. Students in all levels attend the ELI's core class to study the fundamentals of Listening/Conversation and Reading/Writing/Grammar. Students attend supplementary classes to enhance their English language skills and study areas such as Pronunciation, Advanced Grammar, Word Processing, and E-Mail and Internet. Advanced-level students may earn University credit by taking courses in the areas of Writing for Academic Purposes, Reading for Academic Purposes, Research Paper, and University Seminar. The ELI provides its students with the opportunity to take the Institutional TOEFL and TOEIC (Test of English for International Communication) for a minimal fee. Students who meet all academic qualifications may enroll directly into Eastern Washington University without a TOEFL score after successfully completing the ELI program.
Students are given the unique opportunity to be matched with an International Peer Advisor. These advisors are Eastern Washington University students who pick up students at the airport and work together with ELI students to offer English conversation practice, organize special on-campus and off-campus activities and help students grow accustomed to American life. The ELI also provides its students with the Cultural Mentor support program to offer one more way to ease students' culture shock and to grow accustomed to life at EWU and in the United States. The ELI selects Cultural Mentors who also attended the ELI and are now regular international students at the University.
Small, interactive classes are emphasized. Class sizes range from 8 to 15 students. Every effort is made to keep classes at an ideal size for effective English language instruction. |
