Full-Time Intensive English Course

The ALP provides two 12-week intensive courses per year, beginning in September and February. The ALP's 4-week Winter Institute is offered in January and the 4- and 7-week Summer Institute courses are offered in May and June. Students enrolled in the ALP intensive courses receive 20 hours of in-class instruction and language laboratory work per week, practicing all areas of the English language including grammatical accuracy, fluency and pronunciation, listening and reading comprehension, and writing ability.

The ALP offers its students 10 levels of academically challenging English classes, from beginning to highly advanced. Upon students' arrival at the ALP, they are required to take the English Placement Test to help determine the level best-suited to their ability. Recognized as a distinguished leader in innovative curriculum design, ALP English instruction requires intensive class participation and active use of spoken and written English. Special elective courses are available to students in levels 6 to 8 in the fall or spring programs to study areas such as current events, American business or the American short story.

Small, interactive classes are emphasized. Beginning classes are generally limited to 13 students; Intermediate and Advanced-level classes include no more than 18 students. Every effort is made to keep classes at an ideal size for effective English language instruction.
