  • About the ESL Program
  • The UMass Amherst ESL Program assists English as additional language learners in successfully reaching their language-learning goals, particularly those goals related to pursuing higher education within the U.S. or English-medium contexts.
    We have two online offerings:
    
    • Intensive English courses: 15+ hours a week of online lessons with a mixture of lessons you can complete in your own-time (asynchronous) and opportunities for live interactions (synchronous); plus, one-on-one live tutoring. Each semester is 13 weeks, and upon completion, we will provide you with a proficiency screening and certificate stating your current English proficiency level based on the CEFR scale (A1-C2).
    
    • Advanced College-Credit, Academic English courses: each of our 3-credit college courses focuses on specific academic English skills for advanced learners. These courses also contain a mixture of lessons you can complete in your own-time (asynchronous) and opportunities for live interactions (synchronous); plus, one-on-one live tutoring. If you complete five of our credit-bearing classes, you will receive a UMass Amherst Certificate in Academic English.
    
    For both offerings, we have three terms: Fall (Sept-Dec), Spring (Feb-May), & Summer (May-August)

  • Overview
  • -- Intensive English course:
    
    - We offer two levels of Intensive English: Lower Intermediate (B1) & Upper Intermediate (B2) (Beginner level (A2) coming soon!)
    
    - Once you enroll in Intermediate Intensive English, we will provide you with a placement test that determines the curriculum you will work with.
    
    - Your instructor will arrange live interactions with participants based on time zone and student availability.
    - Daily lessons & timely feedback is provided on all work.
    - Expect to engage with course material for a minimum of 15 hours a week.
    
    -- Advanced Level Academic English
    
    - These are credit-bearing classes that are taught at the C1 CEFR level and require participants to be at least at the upper intermediate-level to participate (TOEFL, IELTS, or Duolingo score required)
    
    - Each course is focused on a different aspect of Academic English:
    
    ESL125 Oral Communication (speaking)
    ESL126 Vocabulary & Comprehension
    ESL127 Investigating Media
    ESL128 America through Academic Readings
    ESL129 Oral Comprehension (listening)
    ESL131 Academic Presentations
    
    • Courses are all designed from a task & project-based perspective. While tests & quizzes still have their place in our curriculum, your instructors will use more tasks and projects rather than tests to support your language development. Some examples of tasks and projects are: presenting information through infographics, working in groups to design and produce video content, designing and sharing information through posters or videos, and writing papers for a specific purpose. In addition to courses, students will have access to live one-on-one tutoring throughout the semester of their enrollment.
