  • About the ESL Program
  • Students in PIA’s Intensive English program learn the skills and knowledge they need to study at universities in the US. There are six levels of classes, from English Basics to Level 5. PIA also has elective courses, such as Service Learning and ESL Test Preparation. Students in these courses gain skills they need to succeed at university and in their future careers. In addition, students can access free study support services, such as tutoring, academic advising, success skills workshops, and conversation partners.

  • PIA provides students with the opportunity to enjoy a homestay experience. The homestay option is ideal for those students who want to experience local culture first-hand as a member of a family and practice their conversational English. Students are encouraged to make their housing arrangements as early as possible due to the limited amount of space available. Private off-campus apartments are also available; however students must make their own arrangements. For more information, use the Contact Address to ask the school directly.

  • PIA is located on the campus of Warner Pacific University in Portland, Oregon, only 5 miles (8 km) east of downtown Portland. The campus is next to Mt. Tabor Park, a beautiful natural area with trails and views of the city. The Portland International Airport is approximately 9 miles (14 km) from PIA. PIA is also close to various shopping areas and entertainment options, such as SE Division Street and Hawthorne Boulevard. Portland is a friendly, safe city with many entertainment and activity options. Ocean beaches are 90 miles (145 km) from Portland, and snow sports are available at Mt. Hood, just 60 miles (95 km) from Portland! Portland is also famous for its restaurants, coffee, beer, and music and art festivals.
    
  • Conditional Admission / Credit Courses
  • The University of Portland, Portland State University, Warner Pacific University, Pacific Northwest College, and Clackamas Community College recognize completion of PIA’s Intensive English program as meeting English language proficiency requirements so PIA graduates do not need a TOEFL or IELTS score to apply for admission at these schools. Applicants must meet all of the other application requirements of the college or university.

  • Overview
  • PIA's Intensive English students take classes that focus on grammar, reading, writing, and speaking and listening. Along with these subjects, students learn how to work in groups, use relevant technologies, and explore cultural topics. The lower levels (Basics, 1, and 2) focus on practical skills. For example, students in Level 1 learn to read signs, study everyday vocabulary words, work with basic English grammar, and discuss common topics. The upper levels (3, 4, and 5) focus on academic English work designed to prepare students for university study, such as research, presentations, group work, and essays.
    
    Each teacher has a different style, but classes at PIA include some consistent elements. Most days, class begins with a warm-up to help students focus on the topic, followed by a review of the homework. Then the teacher leads the students through learning and practicing new material. Students use many different methods to understand English, including discussion, bookwork, and games. Usually, students are given homework to help them practice more outside of class. All Intensive English courses have an assigned textbook, and there are regular assessments, such as chapter tests and the midterm and final exams.
