    • About the ESL Program
    • The Intensive English Language Center (IELC) program is located on the California State University Bakersfield campus. IELC invites students from around the world to study in their international friendly and safe community of Bakersfield. IELC offers six 8-week sessions throughout the year with start dates in January, March, May, June, August and October. Upon reaching the advanced-level, students can opt to enroll in the IELC Bridge Program, which allows students to register for undergraduate classes without being admitted as an Undergraduate Student. Completion of advanced-level courses also allows students to be eligible for conditional admission. In addition to perfecting Academic English in the classroom for 23 hours a week, IELC students are given the opportunity to develop their knowledge of American Culture and life through activities, student organizations, and homestays. The IELC program is a member of EnglishUSA (AAIEP: American Association of Intensive English Programs), NAFSA: Association of International Educators and CATESOL: California Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages.

      IELC at California State University Bakersfield provides our international students with a friendly, warm and safe environment to grow as a global citizen. Inside and outside the classroom our students have numerous opportunities to develop their English and cultural knowledge. Throughout the day, our students engage with our friendly and highly qualified faculty and student workers. Outside of the classroom, our students have numerous opportunities to participate in various activities. Through the term, our students compete in intramural soccer tournaments, join potlucks at the international club, teach their homestay family how to cook international food, join a dance party in the dormitory, visit the headquarters of large global corporations, or even visit a local farm. Given our central location, weekends trip to nearby Las Vegas, San Francisco, Los Angeles are just a few hour drive away.     • The IELC at CSU, Bakersfield provides students with the opportunity to live in on-campus dormitories, or enjoy a homestay experience. Students living on-campus will be close to classes, campus activities and other students. The school also arranges homestays for those students who want to experience local culture first-hand as a member of a family and practice their conversational English. Students are encouraged to make their housing arrangements as early as possible due to the limited amount of space available.     • About This Course
    • The program provides six 8-week sessions throughout the year. Students receive 23 hours of instruction per week to in Academic English Reading, Writing, Listening, Speaking and TOEFL. IELC also offers classes spanning a wide range of interesting subjects such as American culture, study skills, TOEFL preparation and more.

      In addition to Academic English classes, the program focuses on cultural and social opportunities. Throughout the year, students have the opportunity to visit Undergraduate Academic Classes, Student Organizations, campus events, and activities on and off campus.

      The IELC faculty are experienced teachers with Master's degrees and special training in teaching English and Culture.
