- About the ESL School
- Founded in 1961, ELS Language Centers is a group of private language schools that help millions of students from more than 140 countries significantly improve their English skills in the shortest time possible and prepare them for academic study at an American college or university. With more than 40 ELS locations available across 25 U.S. states, students are exposed to different cross-cultural ideas and influences that will deepen their English communication skills and cultural understanding. Learning from native speaking instructors, students study from a well-developed curriculum designed to enhance their fluency and accuracy and hone their skills in the areas of structure/speaking, conversation, and reading/writing. Students also select from a wide variety of elective classes to study topics pertinent to their individual interests, including TOEFL Preparation, Business English, Pronunciation, U.S. Culture, and Listening & Note Taking. As an added feature, more than 550 American colleges and universities accept the ELS Certification of English in place of the TOEFL in order to admit students to their undergraduate degree programs. - Student Countries of Origin
- The ELS Center at the University of North Dakota has hosted hundreds of students from around the world. Recently, the majority of students have come to ELS from Asia, including Korea (40%), Taiwan (20%) and Japan. Students also come from countries in Latin America (25%), Europe (5%) and other countries worldwide.
- Faculty Qualifications
- ELS instructors are highly-qualified, native speaking professionals. Many instructors have lived and traveled abroad and have extensive training and experience teaching English to students from around the world. The personal and academic qualities of ELS instructors make each uniquely qualified to offer meaningful language-learning opportunities and to care deeply about their students.
- Housing
- ELS provides students with the opportunity to live in on-campus dormitories or enjoy a homestay experience. Students living on-campus will be close to classes, campus activities and other students – both American and international. ELS also arranges homestays for those students who want to experience American culture first-hand as a member of a family and practice their conversational English. Students are encouraged to make their housing arrangements as early as possible due to the limited amount of space available. Private off-campus apartments may also available; however students must make their own arrangements. For more information, use the Contact Address to ask the school directly.
- Surrounding Area
- The ELS Language Center on the UND campus is situated in a lovely, wooded neighborhood of Grand Forks, North Dakota, a friendly city that sits on the western bank of the Red River of the North in an area called the Red River Valley. As one of the oldest major cities in the Dakotas, Grand Forks is home to over 50,000 residents and is largely influenced by the University of North Dakota. The North Dakota Museum of Art - located on the UND campus - brings many nationally-touring exhibits to Grand Forks and displays the work of local artists while also, it provides additional gallery space for art students’ work. UND’s active Theater Arts and Music department presents student stage theater productions to the Grand Forks community throughout the year while other local cultural performances are performed by the Greater Grand Forks Symphony Orchestra, the Grand Forks Master Choral and the North Dakota Ballet Company. Grand Forks residents experience four distinct seasons with summers being moderately hot and dry, averaging about 26°C, while snowy winters drop to cold lows in January with average temperatures being a chilly -8°C. Local residents love the outdoors, however, and frequently visit the Greenway – a picturesque urban park spanning 2, 200 acres – to hike, run, rollerblade, bike, canoe, kayak or fish, all in the heart of Grand Forks. The Greenway also includes all-season trails, nature preserves, picnic sites and camping grounds to enjoy throughout the year.
