  • About the ESL School
  • Founded in 1961, ELS Language Centers is a group of private language schools that help millions of students from more than 140 countries significantly improve their English skills in the shortest time possible and prepare them for academic study at an American college or university. With more than 40 ELS locations available across 25 U.S. states, students are exposed to different cross-cultural ideas and influences that will deepen their English communication skills and cultural understanding. Learning from native speaking instructors, students study from a well-developed curriculum designed to enhance their fluency and accuracy and hone their skills in the areas of structure/speaking, conversation, and reading/writing. Students also select from a wide variety of elective classes to study topics pertinent to their individual interests, including TOEFL Preparation, Business English, Pronunciation, U.S. Culture, and Listening & Note Taking. As an added feature, more than 550 American colleges and universities accept the ELS Certification of English in place of the TOEFL in order to admit students to their undergraduate degree programs. ELS Language Centers is a proud member of AAIEP, the American Association of Intensive English Programs promoting professional standards and high-quality English programs.

  • Student Countries of Origin
  • The ELS Center at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis has hosted thousands of students from more than 40 countries around the world. Recently, the majority of students have come to ELS from Asia, including Korea (38%), Taiwan (15%), Japan (12%) and others (10%). Students also come from countries in Latin America (12%), Europe (4%), the Middle East (3%) and other countries worldwide.
  • Faculty Qualifications
  • ELS instructors are highly-qualified, native speaking professionals. Many instructors have lived and traveled abroad and have extensive training and experience teaching English to students from around the world. The personal and academic qualities of ELS instructors make each uniquely qualified to offer meaningful language-learning opportunities and to care deeply about their students.
  • Housing
  • ELS provides students with the opportunity to live in an off-campus residence or enjoy a homestay experience. For students who prefer a more independent lifestyle, off-campus residences provide more privacy and offer opportunities to interact with people in the community outside the campus environment. ELS also arranges homestays for those students who want to experience American culture first-hand as a member of a family and practice their conversational English. Students are encouraged to make their housing arrangements as early as possible due to the limited amount of space available. Private off-campus apartments may also available; however students must make their own arrangements. For more information, use the Contact Address to ask the school directly.
  • Surrounding Area
  • The ELS Language Center on the IUPUI campus is nestled in a charming neighborhood of Indianapolis - locally called “Indy” - just adjacent to vast White River State Park, a favorite destination for tourists, Indy residents and IUPUI students and faculty. The Park acts as an oasis in the middle of the downtown area and is filled with some of the city’s highest-acclaimed attractions, including the Indianapolis Zoo, the Indiana Historical Society, White River Gardens, “The Lawn” – a gathering spot for concerts – and the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Hall of Champions. Home to over 860,000 residents, Indy is the capital city of the State of Indiana and the 12th largest city in the United States that prides itself on its rich cultural heritage and its warm “Hoosier” hospitality, a word commonly used to denote an Indiana native. With four professional sports teams – the Colts (NFL football), the Pacers (NBA basketball), the Fever (women’s NBA basketball) and the Indians (international league baseball) – Indy sports enthusiasts have ample opportunities to watch live games year-round. Often referred as the “Amateur Sports Capital of the World,” Indy is also home to the headquarters of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), the main governing body for college sports in the United States. Most famously known as the “Racing Capital of the World,” Indy is home to the largest Grand Prix race in the world and, most significantly, the largest annual single-day sporting event in the world, the Indianapolis 500 – nearly 300,000 fans are in attendance and is “the most televised annual event in the world.”
  • About the College/University
  • Founded in 1969 as part of the Indiana University (IU) System, Indiana University – Purdue University of Indianapolis (IUPUI) is an urban, state-supported research institution that operates as a partnership between Indiana and Purdue Universities, with IU as the managing partner. IUPUI is a campus of Indiana University that grants degrees in over 185 academic programs from both Indiana University and Purdue University. Home to state-wide programs in medicine, law, dentistry, nursing, allied health and social work, the 511-acre campus is home to over 29,000 undergraduate and graduate students from 49 U.S. states and 122 nations from around the world. Associate, bachelor’s, master’s, doctoral degrees and professional certificates are awarded to IUPUI students among the university’s 17 academic schools and colleges: Art & Design; Business; Continuing Studies; Dentistry; Education; Engineering and Technology; Health and Rehabilitation Sciences; Informatics; Journalism; Law; Liberal Arts; Library and Information Science; Medicine; Music; Nursing; Physical Education and Tourism Management; Public and Environmental Affairs; Science; and Social Work. Outside of the classroom, IUPUI students have ample opportunities to get involved in the campus community and join one of the 100 student-run organizations. Students can engage in community service within the Indianapolis area with “Students Offering Service,” try out the ceramics or rowing clubs, join the “Swing Cats” and practice swing dancing, participate in the Catholic Campus ministry, or perform in one of the many theater or dance troupes that regularly perform on-campus. IUPUI’s sports teams, “The Jaguars,” compete at the NCAA Division I level with men and women basketball, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, volleyball, cross-country running and swimming.

The program is suitable for students who want to enjoy a short vacation in the United States and study English part-time. It is also ideal for students who are visiting the USA for the very first time, and want to travel and do sightseeing as much as possible.
