About the ESL School
Founded in 1961, ELS Language Centers is a group of private language schools that help millions of students from more than 140 countries significantly improve their English skills in the shortest time possible and prepare them for academic study at an American college or university. With more than 40 ELS locations available across 25 U.S. states, students are exposed to different cross-cultural ideas and influences that will deepen their English communication skills and cultural understanding. Students also select from a wide variety of elective classes to study topics pertinent to their individual interests, including TOEFL Preparation, Business English, Pronunciation, U.S. Culture, and Listening & Note Taking. Student Countries of Origin
The ELS Center at Mount Ida College has hosted thousands of students from more than 50 countries around the world. Recently, the majority of students have come to ELS from Asia, including Japan (28%), Korea (22%), and Taiwan (14%). Students also come from countries in Latin America (20%), Europe (8%), and other countries worldwide.
Faculty Qualifications
ELS instructors are highly-qualified, native speaking professionals. Many instructors have lived and traveled abroad and have extensive training and experience teaching English to students from around the world. The personal and academic qualities of ELS instructors make each uniquely qualified to offer meaningful language-learning opportunities and to care deeply about their students.
Housing
ELS provides students with the opportunity to live in on-campus dormitories or enjoy a homestay experience. Students living on-campus will be close to classes, campus activities and other students – both American and international. ELS also arranges homestays for those students who want to experience American culture first-hand as a member of a family and practice their conversational English. Students are encouraged to make their housing arrangements as early as possible due to the limited amount of space available. Private off-campus apartments may also available; however students must make their own arrangements. For more information, use the Contact Address to ask the school directly.
Surrounding Area
The ELS Language Center on the Mount Ida College campus is situated in the charming New England suburban city of Newton, Massachusetts, located just 13 kilometers from downtown Boston. Ranked twice as “America’s Safest City,” Newton is home to 90,000 residents, as well as to six schools and colleges, and two symphony orchestras, the New Philharmonia and the Newtown Symphony Orchestra. Regarded as an historic area of Massachusetts sometimes called “The Newtons,” Newton does not have a single city center; rather, it is comprised of thirteen “villages,” each with a different name and a small, lovely “downtown” area of its own. If an active cultural and urban experience is what you seek, Newton is a 30-minute train ride from the heart of downtown Boston. As a city widely considered as one of the most desirable cities to live in the United States, Boston is internationally recognized as the nation's educational capital with more than 60 colleges and universities in the immediate area, creating an atmosphere rich with artistic, social and intellectual opportunities. Visitors can explore America's early history by walking the Freedom Trail, attend a world-renowned performance of the Boston Pops at Symphony Hall, cheer on the Red Sox at Fenway Park, Boston's professional baseball team, shop along elegant Newbury Street or simply relax in the Public Garden. There are ample opportunities for weekend trips along the East Coast, where you can go sightseeing in Providence and New York City, feast on lobster in Maine, hike New Hampshire's White Mountains, or explore the magnificent beaches of Cape Cod.
About the College/University
Founded in 1899, Mount Ida College is a private, co-educational institution that provides a diverse community of learners with a challenging education blending the liberal arts with professional preparation. Home to 60 faculty members and 1,300 full- and part-time students from over 30 U.S. states and 30 nations from around the world, the 72-acre campus is comprised of four schools offering more than 25 areas of academic specialization: the School of Animal Science; School of Arts and Science; School of Business; and School of Design. Awarding associate and bachelor’s degrees among its students, Mount Ida’s most popular majors include forensic science, business administration, fashion design, hotel/tourism management, interior design, and sports management. A pre-law concentration is also available at the college as well as minors in the areas of child study, communications, criminal justice, forensic psychology, and legal studies. Most majors offered at the college include an optional internship opportunity to provide students with practical, valuable professional experience. With Mount Ida’s close proximity to Boston, students gain internship opportunities at some of the world’s most foremost institutions in a variety of fields. When students are not in class, they join one of the many on-campus organizations, including the dance team, international student clubs, theater troupes, volunteer groups, and the student-run radio station, “WIDA.”
