- About the School
- Founded in 1961, ELS Language Centers is a group of private language schools that help millions of students from more than 140 countries significantly improve their English skills in the shortest time possible and prepare them for academic study at an American college or university. With more than 40 ELS locations available across 25 U.S. states, students are exposed to different cross-cultural ideas and influences that will deepen their English communication skills and cultural understanding. Learning from native speaking instructors, students study from a well-developed curriculum designed to enhance their fluency and accuracy and hone their skills in the areas of structure/speaking, conversation, and reading/writing. Students also select from a wide variety of elective classes to study topics pertinent to their individual interests, including TOEFL Preparation, Business English, Pronunciation, U.S. Culture, and Listening & Note Taking. As an added feature, more than 550 American colleges and universities accept the ELS Certification of English in place of the TOEFL in order to admit students to their undergraduate degree programs. ELS Language Centers is a proud member of AAIEP, the American Association of Intensive English Programs promoting professional standards and high-quality English programs.

- Student Countries of Origin
- ELS San Diego Center has hosted thousands of students from more than 40 countries around the world. Recently, the majority of students have come to ELS from Asia, including Japan (30%), Korea (24%), and Taiwan (6%). Students also come from countries in Latin America (26%), Europe (15%), the Middle East (4%), and other countries.
- Faculty Qualifications
- ELS instructors are highly-qualified, native speaking professionals. Many instructors have lived and traveled abroad and have extensive training and experience teaching English to students from around the world. The personal and academic qualities of ELS instructors make each uniquely qualified to offer meaningful language-learning opportunities and to care deeply about their students.
- Housing
- ELS provides students with the opportunity to live in an off-campus residence or enjoy a homestay experience. For students who prefer a more independent lifestyle, off-campus residences provide more privacy and offer opportunities to interact with people in the community outside the campus environment. ELS also arranges homestays for those students who want to experience American culture first-hand as a member of a family and practice their conversational English. Students are encouraged to make their housing arrangements as early as possible due to the limited amount of space available. Private off-campus apartments may also available; however students must make their own arrangements. For more information, use the Contact Address to ask the school directly.
- Surrounding Area
- ELS San Diego Center is located in the prestigious NBC Building and is conveniently situated in the heart of downtown San Diego’s entertainment and shopping district, Horton Plaza, replete with fashionable boutiques, eclectic restaurants, and movie theaters; the historic Gaslamp Quarter is a quick 10-minute walk from the Center and boasts a lively nightlife. As California’s second largest city and the nation’s seventh, San Diego is home to nearly 1.3 million residents within the metropolitan area and 2.8 million people within San Diego County. San Diego is most widely-recognized for its nearly perfect climate, 70 miles of pristine beaches, and a vast assortment of family attractions, including the world-renowned San Diego Zoo, Legoland California, and SeaWorld San Diego. The area’s idyllic climate makes spending outdoors a daily pleasure. The 600,000-acre Anza Borrego Desert State Park is an outdoor enthusiast’s paradise with endless opportunities available to go hiking and camping, fishing, and quietly observe wildlife among the regionally-famous spring wildflowers. For those that prefer water sports, miles of Pacific Ocean coastline readily offer year-round surfing, swimming, sailing, and boating opportunities. With San Diego being only a 30-minute drive from the U.S.-Mexico border, many visit Mexico's border town, Tijuana, for some duty-free shopping, sightseeing, and enjoying an authentic Mexican meal. For a weekend trip, the city of Los Angeles and its major attractions are a 180 km drive north of San Diego's downtown area.

2009/3/6 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful.ELS
