About the ESL School
Founded in 1961, ELS Language Centers is a group of private language schools that help millions of students from more than 140 countries significantly improve their English skills in the shortest time possible and prepare them for academic study at an American college or university. With more than 40 ELS locations available across 25 U.S. states, students are exposed to different cross-cultural ideas and influences that will deepen their English communication skills and cultural understanding. Learning from native speaking instructors, students study from a well-developed curriculum designed to enhance their fluency and accuracy and hone their skills in the areas of structure/speaking, conversation, and reading/writing. Students also select from a wide variety of elective classes to study topics pertinent to their individual interests, including TOEFL Preparation, Business English, Pronunciation, U.S. Culture, and Listening & Note Taking. As an added feature, more than 550 American colleges and universities accept the ELS Certification of English in place of the TOEFL in order to admit students to their undergraduate degree programs. Student Countries of Origin
The ELS Center at the Dominican University of California has hosted hundreds of students from more than 50 countries around the world. Recently, the majority of students have come to ELS from Asia, including Japan (30%), Taiwan (25%), and Korea (20%). Students also come from countries in Latin America (6%), Europe (9%), the Middle East (4%), and other countries worldwide.
Faculty Qualifications
ELS instructors are highly-qualified, native speaking professionals. Many instructors have lived and traveled abroad and have extensive training and experience teaching English to students from around the world. The personal and academic qualities of ELS instructors make each uniquely qualified to offer meaningful language-learning opportunities and to care deeply about their students.
Housing
ELS provides students with the opportunity to live in on-campus dormitories, off-campus residences, or enjoy a homestay experience. Students living on-campus will be close to classes, campus activities and other students – both American and international. For students who prefer a more independent lifestyle, off-campus residences provide more privacy and offer opportunities to interact with people in the community outside the campus environment. ELS also arranges homestays for those students who want to experience American culture first-hand as a member of a family and practice their conversational English. Students are encouraged to make their housing arrangements as early as possible due to the limited amount of space available. Private off-campus apartments may also available; however students must make their own arrangements. For more information, use the Contact Address to ask the school directly.
Surrounding Area
The ELS Language Center on the DUC campus is situated in the city of San Rafael just a few short miles from downtown San Francisco and the world-famous Napa Valley. Home to nearly 60,000 residents, San Rafael is centrally located in Marin County and is regarded as the area’s governmental, business, and cultural center. With the campus being an easy stroll to San Rafael’s town center, students enjoy visiting the comfortable outdoor cafes, shopping among charming boutiques, or taking in a symphony, opera, or theater performance at The Marin Civic Center, designed by the renowned Frank Lloyd Wright. The year-round favorable climate offers residents plenty of opportunities to spend the days outdoors whether to go sailing, kayaking or surfing on the nearby bay or Pacific Ocean, hiking and mountain biking among dozens of public parks, or play a game of golf on the nearby courses. Beyond San Rafael are the fantastic sights and sounds of San Francisco, famously dubbed “America’s Favorite City.” Celebrated for its beauty and sophistication, San Francisco's hilly streets provide gorgeous views of the San Francisco Bay and its famous bridges, including the world-renowned Golden Gate Bridge. The city is home to a variety of cultures and ethnicities, encouraging visitors and residents alike to explore diverse neighborhoods such as vibrant Chinatown, the Italian quarter of North Beach, and popular Fisherman's Wharf. A trip across the Golden Gate Bridge will take you to beautiful Muir Woods National Monument, the "best tree-lovers monument" in the world, the famous wine country of Napa and Sonoma, and picturesque beaches and hiking trails. For outstanding camping and hiking excursions, spectacular Yosemite National Park is only a 3 1/2 hour drive from San Francisco.
About the College/University
Founded in 1890 as a Catholic liberal arts college, the Dominican University of California (DUC) is an independent, learner-centered institution with a strong Catholic heritage that fosters a strong, close-knit community. The 80-acre wooded DUC campus is home to 1,340 undergraduate and 640 graduate students from a wide range of ethnic, cultural, and religious backgrounds. Interweaving Dominican values, the liberal arts and sciences, and the skills necessary to live and work in an interdependent world, DUC offers its students undergraduate, graduate, and professional and continuing education degree programs in over 30 areas of academic specialization among its two colleges: the School of Arts and Sciences; and the School of Business, Education, and Leadership. DUC is consistently regarded as providing outstanding academic instruction, so much so that the 2005 U.S. News & World Report ranked DUC in the top tier of “Western Universities – Master’s.” Outside of the classroom, students are active in the campus community, whether by joining one of the many student-run organizations, writing for the campus newspaper, The Habit, or cheering on the DUC sports teams known as “The Penguins.” As a member of the National Associate of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), DUC men and women play in such athletic teams as soccer, basketball, golf and tennis, lacrosse, volleyball, and softball.
