  • About the ESL Program
  • Established in 1974, the English Language Institute (ELI) at the University of Hartford is a comprehensive academic program designed to help international students attain the English proficiency essential to enter an American college or university, particularly the University of Hartford. The program is also designed for students wishing to learn English for personal or professional purposes. The ELI seeks to enhance students’ overall educational and cultural experiences by working towards greater proficiency in understanding, reading, writing, and speaking English. Committed to providing students with the best English instruction, the ELI uses the most current textbooks, supplementary materials and instructional techniques available in the field of language learning. Students receive a University of Hartford identification card and gain full access to the campus facilities, including the indoor and outdoor swimming pools, lighted tennis courts, the sports center, the University health clinic, and computer labs with Internet access. The ELI is a proud member of AAIEP, the American Association of Intensive English Programs promoting professional standards and high-quality English programs.

  • Students have the option to live in on-campus dormitories during the summer semester only. Students living on-campus will be close to classes, campus activities, and other students - both American and international. The ELI will provide students with information about other available housing options; however, it is the students'' responsibility to make their individual housing arrangements.   • The main campus is located in West Hartford, a charming New England town situated in central Connecticut and adjacent to the city of Hartford, the state capital. Home to more than 60,000 residents, West Hartford is a picturesque residential suburb of the Hartford metropolitan area that is often recognized as "where city style meets village charm." Recently, West Hartford was ranked #1 by Connecticut Magazine for its public schools and #2 overall among the state’s cities and towns of similar populations for quality of life. A quick bus ride takes residents to downtown Hartford, an eclectic city situated in a quaint New England setting offering countless amenities. Internationally-recognized companies have established headquarters in the Hartford area, including Aetna Insurance, United Technologies, The Hartford, Gerber Scientific, and ESPN (the Entertainment and Sports Programming Network).   • Founded in 1877, the University of Hartford (UofH) is an independent, comprehensive institution of higher learning comprised of three campuses located in Hartford, West Hartford, and Bloomfield. UofH was chartered in 1957 when three institutions, the Hartford Art School, Hillyer College, and the Hartt School of Music, were united to create one academically dynamic university. The scenic and spacious 320-acre, wooded main campus in West Hartford is home to 4,400 full-time and 1,142 part-time undergraduates, and 1,456 graduate students from 47 different U.S. states and 69 nations around the world. The University offers its students 86 undergraduate majors and 32 graduate degree programs among the eight UofH Colleges: Arts & Sciences; Business; Education, Nursing, & Health Professions; Engineering; the Hartford Art School; Hartford College for Women; The Hartt School of Music; and Hillyer College. UofH athletic teams, “The Hawks,” compete in Division 1 of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), the highest level of intercollegiate competition, and continue to be a source of pride among students and the university. Outside of the classroom, students are actively involved in nearly 100 student-run clubs and organizations, including culture & faith organizations, student government, and professional development groups, as well as radio stations, a campus television station, and “The Informer,” the official student newspaper.

• Study Options

  • Intensive English Program

  • Overview
  • The Intensive English Program offers two 14-week sessions during the fall and spring semesters. Two 6-week sessions are also available during the summer season at the high-intermediate and advanced levels. Students enrolled in the Program receive 20 hours of instruction per week in the classroom and in the audio/visual Resource Center.
    
    The Program offers 3 levels of English classes, from low intermediate to advanced. At the beginning of the session, students take an English proficiency test to help determine the level best-suited to their ability. (*Low intermediate is approximately equivalent to 400 on the TOEFL(PBT) or 30 on the internet-based TOEFL(iBT)). The curriculum emphasizes students’ reading comprehension, vocabulary development, oral/aural skills, grammar usage, and writing skills development. As part of the program, students supplement their class work with private tutorial sessions and computer-assisted language learning. Advanced-level students may take one academic course for credit at the University of Hartford in conjunction with their ELI studies.
    
    Outside of the classroom, students have the opportunity to share cross-cultural experiences and participate in typical American activities, including picnics, barbecues, campus musical and theatrical performances, sports events, and out-of-town trips to destinations such as New York City and Boston. Each spring, International Week takes place on the University campus and allows ELI students to teach the community about their nation through their native country exhibits, an international potluck dinner, and a parade in their native dress.
    
    Classroom sizes average 12 students per class. Every effort is made to keep classes at an ideal size for effective English language instruction.
