- About the ESL Program
- Established in 1978, the English Language Training Institute (ELTI) provides intensive English instruction for international students planning to attend an American college or university as well as for those pursuing professional English training in the United States. While receiving quality English language instruction in a safe, friendly academic environment, ELTI students enjoy full integration into the university student body and gain access to the facilities and services of the UNC Charlotte campus, including the library, computer labs, student health center, and sports facilities. While attending the ELTI, students develop a close connection with UNC Charlotte, the surrounding community, and the American lifestyle before leaving the program. ELTI is a proud member of UCIEP, a U.S. consortium of University and College Intensive English Programs known for its high professional standards and quality English language instruction.

Since 1978, the teachers and staff at ELTI have helped international students improve their English skills and learn more about life in the United States. - Student Countries of Origin
- The ELTI hosts 350-400 students from 20 to 25 different countries around the world every year. Recently, students have come to the ELTI from Asia (55%), the Middle East (15%), South America (15%), Europe (10%), and Africa (5%).
- Faculty Qualifications
- All ELTI instructors have Master's degrees, native proficiency in English, are highly trained in language instruction, and have extensive experience teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) both in the United States as well as abroad. ELTI faculty members and teachers are experienced and committed to helping international students adapt to their new surroundings.
- Housing
- The ELTI arranges on-campus housing accommodations in a variety of dormitories and apartments. Students living on-campus will be close to classes, campus activities, and other students - both American and international. Students are encouraged to arrange housing as early as possible due to the limited amount of space available. For students not living in residence halls, several apartment complexes located near the University are within walking distance or on public bus routes. - Surrounding Area
- Home to more than 1 million residents, Charlotte, locally known as “the Queen City,” offers countless cultural, entertainment, and educational attractions, from the fine artwork of the Mint Museum to theme parks and hands-on science museums. The rapid growth of Charlotte/Douglas International Airport has helped make the city a national transportation center, and with two of the nation's largest banks based in Charlotte, the city is the second largest banking center in the United States. Sports fans cheer for Charlotte’s winning professional football team, the Carolina Panthers, while others tee off at any one of 80 golf courses in the area. Each year, more than one million visitors flock to Charlotte to experience the professional car racing of NASCAR. Charlotte residents enjoy a mild climate with temperatures ranging between 77°F (25°C) in the summer and 43°F (6°C) in the winter as well as an average of 233 days of sunshine each year; rainfall averages about 43 inches a year while light snow falls two or three times during the winter. With mild weather year-round, outdoor enthusiasts can choose to explore the majestic Blue Ridge Mountains to the west or the Atlantic Ocean and its beaches to the east – both are only short distances from the city. Charlotte is ideally situated about midway between Atlanta, Georgia, and Richmond, Virginia, and is within a day's drive from the destination cities of Washington, D.C. and Orlando, Florida.
- About the College/University
- Founded in 1946, the University of North Carolina at Charlotte (UNCC) is a comprehensive state university with approximately 23,000 students and is situated on a 950-acre campus just inside the city limits of Charlotte. The natural beauty of rolling hills, forests, and small lakes combined with the modern facilities and easy access to downtown Charlotte produce a comfortable, stimulating learning environment. University Research Park and several shopping centers are located near the UNCC campus. Accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, UNC Charlotte is also a member of the North Carolina Association of Colleges and Universities. The University offers over 90 fields of undergraduate academic instruction, as well as more than 60 graduate-level programs and 18 doctoral programs, in eight colleges: Arts and Sciences, Architecture, Business Administration, Education, Engineering, Information Technology, Nursing and Health Professions, and the Graduate School. Professional programs in all colleges are nationally accredited. International students at UNC Charlotte number about 1,000 and represent over 70 nations from around the world. Several international student organizations and the International Club help students feel at home.

Intensive English Program APPLY- About This Course
- The Intensive English Program offers two 14-week sessions during the fall and spring and one 10-week session during the summer. Students enrolled in the fall and spring sessions receive 20 hours of classroom instruction each week; students enrolled in the summer session receive 24 hours of in-class instruction per week.
The Program offers 6 levels of instruction, from beginning to advanced; the advanced level is designed for students planning to attend graduate programs. Students are placed in one of the six proficiency levels based on a written and oral examination taken during orientation.
The Program provides instruction to prepare students to succeed in university study. At the more basic levels, students receive instruction in English to assist them with adapting to the American culture. More advanced students receive instruction in TOEFL preparation, professional and academic research skills, and public speaking skills. At all levels, students use the most current texts and materials. Students are encouraged to use the University’s many academic facilities, such as the University Writing Center, Learning Center, and Language Resource Center to complement their classroom studies. Qualified students, with the recommendation of the ELTI faculty, are allowed to take University courses for credit in addition to their English courses. Students who complete one full term in the ELTI may participate in this program.
Class sizes generally range from 10 to 14 students per class. Every effort is made to keep classes at an ideal size for effective English language instruction. - Course Data

2009/10/14 English Language Training Institute 正直、語学学校に関して言えば、どこの学校へ行くかではなく、そこで自分が何をするかだと、アメリカで生活をしていて強く思います。僕はこの学校に来てまったく後悔していません。むしろここで良かったなと思っています。先生の質などは、個人によって感じ方が違うので何とも言えませんが、僕は先生方に色々と助けて頂き、かなり感謝しています。生活に関して言えば、週末のアクティビティもそれなりにあるのに加え、平日にもそこそこアメリカ人の人たちと知り合えるアクティビティなどもあります。特に、日本語を学んでいる人たちが結構いるので、積極的に色々なアクティビティに参加すれば、日本人には友達が作りやすい環境だと思います。実際僕はそういう人たちと良く一緒にいます。ここでの生活は、自分次第でどれだけでも楽しくできると思います。

2009/3/6 UNCC 에서 느낀점 제가 공부를 UNCC에서 한 것은 2006년 1월부터 여름학기까지 였습니다. 낯설은 이국에 와서 공부를 한다는 것이 쉽지 않았는데 가르치는 선생님과 스텝들이 친철하게 대하여 주었습니다. 각 파트 선생님들은 나름대로 파트별로 체계적으로 가르쳐 주셨고 많은 도움을 누릴 수 있었습니다. 그리고 학교 시설도 이용할 수 있어서 너무 좋았습니다. 특히 행정을 맡으신 분이 너무 친절하게 대하여 주셔서

2009/3/5 UNCC at Charlotte 학교수업, 기숙사, 방과후 활동, 주변환경 등 전반적인 만족도는 매우 높습니다. 수업 레벨이 여러단계로 구성되어 있어 비슷한 수준의 classmate와 공부할 수 있으며 선생님들의 경험또한 풍부하셔서 부족한 부분을 잘아십니다. 학교 기숙사를 이용할 경우 미국친구들을 만날 기회가 많이 있어 클럽활동 등을 통해 자연스레 많은 native들을 사귈 수 있습니다. 학교 환경은 캠퍼스가 아름답고 안전하다고 생각합니다.
