  Warm greetings from Alabama!
  
  The ELI is located on a beautiful, traditional university campus with a warm climate and friendly people.
  ELI students have access to the university’s benefits and services. The University of Alabama (UA) has several libraries, labs, gyms, and dining halls. UA’s football, soccer, softball, and basketball teams all went to championship games during 2022-2023. Student enjoy watching the free UA sporting events.
  
  The ELI office 20 hours of intensive English per week taught by experienced teachers with advanced degrees. The ELI also provides the following free services to students: activities, seminars, tutoring, conversation classes with UA students, and a conversation partner program.
  
  The ELI offers elementary (CEFR A2) to advanced (CEFR C1) courses.
  Small class sizes and a welcoming staff provide the students the support they need while they are abroad.

- Housing
- The ELI assists students with university dormitory housing arrangements. Living on-campus is conveniently close to classes and campus activities. It is best to arrange housing as early as possible due to the limited amount of space available. School may introduce private off-campus apartments, but students have to make necessary arrangements by themselves. For more information, use the Contact Address to ask the school directly.

- The University of Alabama is located in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, a city of 100,000 people. Tuscaloosa has a relatively warm climate with short winters and long summers. It is located close to major cities in the southeastern United States, such as Birmingham (1 hour by car), Atlanta (3 hours), Nashville (4 hours), and Memphis and New Orleans (4.5 hours).
  
  The state of Alabama is located in the southeastern portion of the United States and is bordered by the states of Tennessee, Mississippi, Georgia, and Florida. Because of its location, Alabama enjoys a relatively warm climate most of the year. Summer is hot, winter is mild, and spring and fall are warm and filled with colorful flowers and trees.
- About the College/University
- The University of Alabama, founded in 1831, is the oldest public university in the state of Alabama. It enrolls an average of 38,000 students who come from every state in the U.S. and from almost 76 countries around the world. International students make up approximately 3.8% of UA’s student population. The University of Alabama boasts one of the most beautiful campuses in the United States and has excellent facilities to offer its students, including six libraries, nine computer labs, and a state-of-the-art student recreation center.
- Conditional Admission / Credit Courses
- For students without the required English test score, conditional admission is available at The University of Alabama. A student with conditional admission will automatically take full-time ELI classes before starting a degree program at UA. An undergraduate student with conditional admission may be admitted to the Pathway to UA and earn academic credit.

Intensive English Program
Overview
Sessions are 8 weeks long and are offered 6 times per year, beginning in January, March, May, June, August, and October. Half sessions are also available (4 weeks long). The Intensive English Program includes 20 - 30 hours of classroom instruction per week as well as access to the ELI Study Center. There are free cultural seminars on Fridays throughout the session. There are also opportunities for special cultural activities and travel.

The ELI offers 5 levels of instruction: Level 2 (high elementary), Level 3 (low intermediate), Level 4 (high intermediate), Level 5 (low advanced), and Level 6 (high advanced). The ELI does not offer Level 1 classes (beginners, CEFR A-1).

Students in the ELI's Intensive English Program take four hours of "core courses" per day: Reading/Writing (2 hours/day), Speaking/Listening (1 hour/day), and Structure (1 hour/day). For these core courses, students are placed in the most appropriate level for each class, meaning that it is possible to be in a different level for each skill area. "Culturally Speaking" is an optional free conversation class in which ELI students meet with US students for informal conversation, primarily about cultural topics. The class meets for 2 hours per week. Culturally Speaking is held during ELI Fall and Spring sessions only; it is not offered during ELI Summer sessions.

The average class size at the ELI is 7 - 10 students per class; maximum class size is 16.

- From Birmingham - Shuttlesworth International Airport (BHM):
  It takes approximately 1 hour to arrive on campus from the airport. Taxis are available at the BHM airport. It will cost approximately US$ 120-140 and will arrive on campus in 1 hour. BHM Airport shuttle services (van) operates on a limited schedule and cost approximately US$ 65-85 (one way).   Studying at the ELI was one of my best life decisions ever!
  When I decided to study there, I thought it would finally be my opportunity to be proficient in English. However, it was much more. I not only got my proficiency, but also experienced an incredible cultural exchange, made new friends, and could grow in personal skills too. All the ELI staff are very thoughtful, kind, and committed to helping each student with their academic needs and level of learning. The ELI Intensive Language Program covers all the needed skills to promote proficiency in English, which makes me feel confident enough to start having conversations on phone, watching movies without subtitles, and exercise writing with the same facility as I would write in my mother language.

  Excellent Professors and Wonderful People
  After taking the ESL intensive program at the English Language Institute, University of Alabama, I am delighted with my results in social and academic environments. At the ELI, I found excellent methodology, professors, and wonderful people working together to help us to advance in each moment. During this time, I used all the UA resources, such as libraries, books, events, locations, and a native partner who shared meaningful time with me. The classes were dynamic, and I felt cared for while we were learning. I enjoyed the time playing and learning at the same time. I loved the cultural speaking classes and the ELI events in which we talked and interacted with native Americans. Definitely, it is a place I recommend. I can say that I can confidently talk in public scenarios and advance in my professional carrier. Thanks, ELI, for each learning!

  ELI Instructors Offer Extra Help
  I learned a lot during my enrollment in ELI. My Reading/Writing, Speaking/Listening and Structure (Grammar) instructors were very patient, helpful and have talented teaching methods that encouraged me to continue learning. The instructors offered extra help when they recognized my academic struggle and assisted with extra materials and references to help me improve. They also recommended that I spend extra time and effort practicing after class. This extra effort encouraged me to work hard which has contributed to my success.

  Student Diversity
  The diversity of students from this course gave me an opportunity to reach others from many different countries. In addition to the English knowledge I acquired, the ELI teachers and staff – were easily accessible, very kind, and have the willingness to help foreign students…. The ELI courses were fundamental to my career. Brazilian researchers need to have the proper English skills in order to develop academic activities.   university of Alabama
  저는 2006년 4월~6월 학기만 다니고 서울에 급히 온 케이스예요.
  그당시 3월에 필라델피아에 있는 ESL 영어부설을 다녔는데 1달만 다니고 나머지 등록 학기는 환불받고 앨라바마로 넘어왔어요.
  3년전 이맘때쯤이었는데 그때 당시 한국인이 전체 학생 중 2,3명뿐이었던걸로 기억합니다. 비율은 당시 일본의 자매결연학교에서 대다수가 수업을 들으러 와서 일본인이 거의 5-60%였구요,나머지는 멕시칸 쪽의 히스패닉과 아랍 계통 학생들이 많았어요. 중국이나 한국, 유럽 학생들이 극히 드물었었어요.
  선생님들이 너무 친절하고 적극적으로 수업에 임하셔서 수업 질은 항상 만족했던걸로 기억합니다. 특히 학생당 blog를 개설해서 일주일에 3번씩 에세이를 쓰고 학생들과 리플을 달며 서로 글을 봐주고 담당 선생님도 문법이나 미국 생활에 대한 조언을 곁들여 줬던게 도움도 되고 재밌었어요.
  그리고 제일 맘에 들었던건 일주일에 2번씩 앨라바마대학교 현지학생들이 볼런티어로 수업에 참여해서 2시간씩 자유롭게 대화하는 시간이 있었는데요, 항상 비슷한 수준의 어학연수생들과 대화하다가 현지미국인들과 직접 대화할 수 있어서 영어수준이 어느정도 자리잡힐 수 있었던것 같아요. 또 운이 좋았는지 친해져서 함께 현지 대학생들 파티에도 참여하고 친하게 지냈어요~
  저는 기숙사 대신 바로 앞에 있는 일반 아파트에서 지냈는데요.
  아파트가 당시 가격으로 한달에 300불정도 내고 지냈습니다.
  다른 곳에 비해 2,3배 정도로 엄청 절약적이었어요.

  勉強するにはよい環境
  学校のカリキュラムがよく考えられていると思う。大学の施設が使える為図書館で勉強したり、PCを使ったり。
  大学生との交流もあるので、大学生のパーティなどに呼んでもらうことがたまにある。
  滞在は寮とアパートが選択できるけど、どちらも生活用品を１からそろえる必要ある。
  参加した時期は中国人、サウジアラビア人などが大半だった。その他いろいろな国からきているため、文化交流なども面白かった。
  郊外なので遊べる所は少ない。

  ゆっくりと時間が流れる南部の大学生活
  広大な敷地にキャンパスを構え、町まで出るにも徒歩では大変。車を持った大学生と早く友達になるのが吉。自転車もあると便利。因みに、週に１～２回、近くの大型スーパーまで買い出しに行けるバンは無料で運航。勉強は深夜まで開いている図書館で。遅くなったら電話一本で寮まで送ってくれるサービスがある。週末などはバーで楽しむのも良いし、また比較的安い値段で行かれる小旅行に参加するのも良い。教師・事務員ともに親切で好意的。ホスピタリティを感じる。但し、各種手続き、I-20に関すること、寮生活での問題など、自分の生命・滞在に直接関わるような問題は自分で責任を持って動いたほうが良い。オンキャンパスの寮に住む場合、テレビ・電子レンジはない。ルームメートと相談して何を買うか、何を共有するか決めるとお金を節約できる。

  Muy Buena Institución el ELI
  Me gusta estudiar en el ELI (English Language Institute) con las clases de Inglés Intencibo e aprendido muchas palabras que yo no sabía cómo las contractions (contracciones) y Muchas cosas, es una muy buena institución el ELI

  English Language Institute
  Ambiente muy agradable, muy buenas instalaciones. Muchísimas actividades sociales, facilidades deportivas extraordinarias, sobre todo el REC Center. Lo recomiendo vivamente a todos los estudiantes internacionales. A ver si se animan a ir mas españoles! y Alabama es preciosa.
